Hi! I'm currently in the Honors Varsity Chamber choir in my high school and am wondering if submitting an art supplement in addition to my application to an engineering program at a school would have any affect on my chances at admission at a university. The reason why I think it might is that it would give admissions officers a more tangible feel for one of my accomplishments; but then again, since I don't plan on majoring or minoring in music, I'm not sure if working on an art supplement would be worthwhile!

Varies from school to school. Some discourage extra supplements, but I think most view it favorably, especially if it highlights something about you that the rest of your app doesn’t show.

As far as specific schools go, how do you think Penn would view this extra supplement?

From their website (http://www.admissions.upenn.edu/apply/supplements):

They describe common types of supplements. For Music:

I don’t think it’s a good idea to send in a supplement in your case unless it does something more than say “I participate in choir.”

Best of luck.

If you are really talented in it and is at the level for state or above awards or recognition, you may/should submit the art supplement. If not, do not bother. Just imagine how many students like you in your school and all over the country.

I wouldn’t submit it. They only care if you’ve done something significant. I submitted one, as an all-state musician with numerous awards, for scholarship purposes, but for you it won’t do squat (Im assuming you don’t have any awards, since you didn’t list them- being in your school’s highest ensemble doesn’t count).

Thank you An0maly and billcsho!
Guineagirl96–I’ve actually been in the district and all-state choirs and have won a few vocal awards in the past 2 years.

@MusicInMe804 if you have been at the all-state level, then I would look into what the schools give in terms of scholarships. Usually they don’t give them for voice, but IF there is a possibility, I would submit one. However, most scholarships for music are dependent on you at least minoring in music, so if that is not an option, it wouldn’t help.
