Like what type of internship/research do they look for and for how long? Does anyone know of anything I could do Atlanta?

I also would like to know this. I’m from NYC and there are no shadowing programs in my borough so any ideas?

Medically/biologically related stuff is what you should be going for. Atlanta has Emory and the CDC so shouldn’t be too hard to find stuff.

If there are doctors in your area there are shadowing opportunities. You don’t need some official program, you’re just following a doctor around and seeing what his/her professional life is like.

Shadowing is usually done on an individual basis and not thru a formal program. You will need to contact physicians in your area to find one willing to allow you to shadow. Start by asking your PCP. Network to find additional possibilities.

Medical schools like to see a long term involvement in research (more than just a semester) if possible. Your best opportunities to participate in lab or clinical research will be at your college. Find positions by talking with your professors, or contacting profs whose research interests you. (HINT: check departmental webpages) Be able to articulate why you want to work for them.

Additional research opportunities are available thru summer program like NSF’s REU (Reseach Experience for Undergraduates). Summer programs often have very early application deadline–typically in January. Your health profession advisor should have list of summer programs.
