Extracurricular activities..?

I don't know how to play any music so I'm not in band or orchestra, I can't sing, and I don't play any sports. Do you guys have any recommendations for what extracurricular activities I can do so I don't fall behind the people who can put sports and music on their applications? Everything will help. Please help me! What are some big things that can surprise the people that see the applications so they are amazed?

there’s a lot more than music and sports out there. Besides, those 2 things its more work than talent, you can completely suck at playing an instrument or throwing/catching a foot ball, but through determination and hard work you could probably become extremely good at both.

Instead of worrying about what looks best however, ask yourself, “what do I want to do?” Define your passion/s and choose your clubs accordingly. Harvard interviewers don’t want to see that you did clubs just for them to “look good” on the application. The only way to really amaze them is to stick to one or two themes (for example, politics and biz.), join a few clubs concerning those subjects, and really excel at them, even to the point of national recognition!

gonzalo…you are a hypocrite.
As for the OP, just try stuff out and see how you like it. Hopefully you’re not a junior already - that gives you time to experiment.

att159, I’m not sure it was the best idea to call Gonzalo out like that. Maybe he’s changed his mind. At any rate, the advice he gave was solid, no matter how cliche.

att159 your post was actually the one that helped me out the most and influenced me enough to radically change my attitude toward EC’s. Since i changed my mind, i’m not being a hypocrite, i’m sharing my new found knowledge so that i can help someone else out just how u helped me. Thanks for that defense Yoda and yeah it is pretty cliche, but still its usually the cliche things that are right xD.

I would recommend the national science olympiads: USABO, USNCO, USAPHO, USACO. Don’t expect to do well from what you learn in school, though. You’re going to have to put a fair amount of time regularly into studying.

i apologize to gonzalo - i didn’t realize that your thread was prior to the posting of this comment, and it seemed like you weren’t taking your own advice seriously, which kind of annoyed me. i understand that you have changed your views and i am glad that you did.
good luck!
