Extracurricular rating/advice thread

I’ll join model un and acdec too then! Thanks for the advice, everyone!(:

I’m a current junior. Thoughts? (I know it’s long, sorry!)

Freshman year:

  1. Soccer
  2. Girl Scouts
  3. Community Service Club
  4. Mock trial (county runners up)
  5. Spanish club
Over the summer, I volunteered at a hospital and at a summer camp as a counselor.

Sophomore year:

  1. Mock trial (County champs, regional champs, third in state)
  2. Soccer
  3. Girl Scouts
  4. Community service club (chairperson)
  5. Model UN
  6. Spanish club
  7. Yearbook
  8. Tutoring
Over the summer, I volunteered at a hospital and took a college course.

Junior year so far:

  1. Mock trial (county champs [that’s all we’ve done so far])
  2. Girl scouts (I’m working towards my Gold Award, which is the GS equivalent of Eagle Scout)
  3. Community service club (chairperson)
  4. Model UN (went to two conferences, won Outstanding at the first, and Best at the second)
  5. Spanish Club (VP)
  6. Yearbook
  7. Debate
  8. Model Congress (haven’t gone to a conference yet)
This summer, I’ll be doing a research internship, volunteering in an overseas country, and starting a charity.

I’m a little frustrated about my lack of leadership positions, but at my school, only seniors get leadership positions.

Next year I’m hoping for leadership positions in mock trial, model UN, model congress, and debate. I’m also going to try to start a charity (as a part of my Gold Award project), which will be linked back to a club at my school, so I guess I’ll have a leadership position in that. I quit soccer during the fall season of junior year, but will probably go back during the spring, or maybe senior year.

I have a few things but not very much.

Marching Band for 3 years (Fresh-junior)

Concert Band (Fresh-soph)

Symphonic Band (soph-junior)

Pep Band (fresh-junior)

Founded school’s Rho Kappa, holds a leadership position (junior)

Member of Mu Alpha Theta (junior)

School’s environmental team (won a nationwide award) (junior)

Tutored elementary school kid for about 30 hours junior year (more to come probably)

Key Club member (junior)

I’m going to apply for NHS at the end of this year, may or may not get in.

I know this is probably a very broad question, but how do you guys go about getting research internships or something of that sort? E-mailing professors in the area?

@marshmallowpop

Those are some great looking ECs and it shows you are pretty dedicated to a certain few while of course adding some things on every year. Starting a charity does seem pretty unique. May I ask, how is it that you are able to volunteer in an overseas country? Where did you get that opportunity from?

Wow everyone on here has great EC’s compared to what I’m accustomed to. I was thinking about starting a club , but from the looks of it there’s no way I can get it started before next year (my senior year). If I do start a club my senior year will adcoms think I’m just trying to look good? I actually do have interest in the club but I don’t want to put it on my app if it will be harmful.

I don’t have much but here’s what I do

On my resume:
German Club (9-now, president)
NC State German Club (10-now)
Student Taskforce (volunteering, community service, self-betterment) - (9-now, parliamentarian)

May join my school’s new Key Club-replacement club (just volunteering)

9: Duke Camp Med
9: Business and Entrepreneurship Academy (my team won)
10: Business and Entrepreneurship Academy Junior Mentor
10: Issues for Future Leaders (my team won the case study)
10: Mock Trial Camp

I can already tell that I have extracurricular fatigue and I definitely don’t plan on putting all of these clubs on. Probably just the ones that I enjoy and the ones where I have a leadership positions in. Senior year I will also probably become a leader in some of the clubs already listed junior year.
