I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with the National Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y)??? My question is how that will look on my college app. I was selected for the Russian summer program btw.
Also, my school offers 24 APs, and we are allowed to take them starting sophomore year (although that year we are only allowed to take one). I will have taken 8 by graduation, I can probably fit in more if I need to, but if this is sufficient I won’t.
I am really more interested in how the scholarship will boost my app though.
Thanks to all!
I’m assuming you mean for last summer, since final decisions for this year are not made until April. They are still interviewing semi-finalists.
NSLI-Y is highly competitive, so IMO the students selected will have a slight boost in their applications due to the selectivity.
That is a question that only your guidance counselor can answer. Will s/he check the “most rigorous” schedule on the Secondary School Report with 8 AP’s? If yes, you are fine; if no, you’re not. It also probably matters which 8 AP’s you are taking. You’ll likely want to target the more challenging ones (e.g. Calc, Chem, USH) rather than the easier ones (e.g. Human Geo, Psych).
Personally, I’m of the opinion that the law of diminishing returns kicks in after you’ve taken 6-8 AP’s. Once, you’ve reach that level, you’d be better served, IMO, by devoting time to other aspects of your application that are not as strong.
