Hi, I'm new to CC, so sorry if I post in the wrong forum. :D
I'm a rising sophomore at an IB school. I'm wondering what clubs or after school activities I should participate in this year. During my freshman year, I wasn't as involved with my school as I wanted to be. I was in Key Club, but I was not an active member. At all. I also played varsity tennis (I sucked!)
I don't think I'll play tennis again. It was a bad experience for me. Should I continue to play anyway? I know colleges love varsity sports. What sport should I do, if I'm not good at anything? What if I do recreational karate? Is that good enough? Is there some way to boost my chances without doing sports in school? Please give me honest answers and helpful advice. I will appreciate it a lot.
As for clubs, I know I want to join Science Olympiad. I'm scared that I'm not smart enough to join Math Club or the Academic Team, but I want to because they're good for my college application. What else can I do? Should I found a club? I was thinking about making a Technology Student Association (TSA) chapter at my school. I was in TSA as an 8th grader and I won 2nd place in the state competition held in Richmond. I think it is similar to Science Olympiad, though, and I don't think anyone will join me. Please tell me what clubs to participate in because I have no music background and I have never played a sport until 9th grade. I want to go to a good college (UVA?) so I would love pointers, advice, tips, anything!

Don’t join clubs/sports just for college apps!!! Colleges see right through this.

Find something that you truly enjoy, no matter what is, and put your energy towards that. If you can’t find something start something. Start the TSA Chapter. You seem to enjoy it and you are good at it.

No they don’t. How exactly would that work? They can’t divine anyone’s motives from staring at their Common App for two seconds, unless it’s somehow made obvious in the recommendations/essay that they never really cared about anything they did. But I think everyone who cares about colleges admissions ends up doing at least a few things just for college apps, even if they don’t think they are. And initially joining something for college admissions purposes doesn’t mean you won’t end up actually enjoying it.

OP…they don’t really care what you do as long as you show leadership and devotion. (They also like to see “passion,” which as far as I can tell means you have several ECs clustered in one area.) Seriously. Just pick a few things and stay with them.

Lol chill out OP. sigh IB kids

Quit tennis if you don’t like it. Doing something you hate just makes you miserable anyways.

Tbh it’s kind of hard to give club recommendations to you because your post didn’t really even say what you enjoy but asked what impresses colleges (did you join IB to simply impress?).

So what do you like? I reckon math and science? Chess? Computers?

Regards,
