Ever since, well, pretty much the second grade, I've been a declared English major. But now that I'm a senior and college is approaching, I'm sort of having second thoughts. I feel confident that I will pursue writing as a career, but during these past two school years I've developed an extreme interest in theater.
I moved towns and transferred schools after 10th grade, and my old school didn't have a theater program, so I never knew I was actually good at acting. Judging by my middle school drama performances, I was under the impression that I was quite horrible, actually.
But I've been a part of every show- from lead actress to musician to assistant director (that's what I'm doing now and I absolutely love it!)- since I began theater in the 11th grade. Like I said, I'm assistant directing our spring competition show- it's The Crucible, if anyone's interested- and it's sort of dawned on me that besides our summer musical and projects in my drama class this semester, I'm not going to get to act again. And that's a really scary thought for me, because I can't possibly imagine not ever performing on stage again. I think it was this semester of drama class that really made me realize acting is something that I want to pursue, or at least continue as a side project throughout my life. Out of a thirty-something person class with tons of Honors Thespians in it, I had the best monologue in the class (that's not just an assumption- I really made the highest grade and actually got a compliment from our teacher, which never happens).
Well, I don't need to convince you guys that I can act. I just want to know if I can continue to act in college without being a theater major. I'm almost certain that I'll be majoring in writing and linguistics, although I am considering doing a double major with English. My school (Georgia Southern, honors program) requires a minor for liberal arts, so I could minor in theater, but I REALLY wanted to minor in religious studies...and I was also considering film studies...
It might not hurt to mention that in performance, I am also drawn to the writing side of it. I've actually written some pretty good plays, and I think if I were to continue down that path, I might could make a career out of it. The film studies idea sort of comes into play there, because I could see myself writing for screen as well.
As you can see, I'm a very confused senior who isn't quite sure what she's going to do with her life. The problem is that I'm terribly interested in everything and I feel like I won't have enough credit hours to squeeze it all in. I can think of about five minors I'd like to have...
Anyways, if anyone out there does theater as an extracurricular without a major or minor, please tell me about it! I'm just afraid they won't take me seriously and I won't get cast in any shows.

yes you can
