Extracurriculars That Matter

I want to keep this thread broad, so no personal info on here to sort through.

I'm just wondering what extracurriculars or other outside of school activities generally look best to colleges? I know that some activities look better at a tech school than at a liberal arts school and vice versa, but I am looking for a general opinion. Any imput would be appreciated.

anything that you can show commitment in is good.

It's not about extracurriculars looking good--it's about doing things that you enjoy doing. I really don't think that writing in your spare time looks better to colleges than playing oboe. Everyone on College Confidential is worrying about what looks best to colleges. Colleges are trying to get a sense of who you are, through your application. Where did you ever get the idea that some activities look better at a tech schools than at a liberal arts school and vice versa? Colleges are looking for smart, interesting students who it would be great to go to college with, and they try to figure out if you'd be that kind of person by looking partly at your extracurricular activities. I think that just being yourself and doing what you like to do and committing yourself to those activities (whether it's chess team or volunteering or just reading books) looks best. But I'm trying to get you not to think about looking good. Don't be yourself and do what you want to do because it might help you get into college--do what you want to do and pursue it because it's your life and you don't want to waste it away and you have natural interests.
