Now that it's about time for me to start thinking about college admissions, I've been trying to put together a list of my extracurriculars. I've also been trying to pick some that might make for good essays, as I have pretty good grades but nothing outstanding (3.8 GPA, working on SAT scores). How strong would a position as volunteering as a swim coach for about 700 hours over the past three years look to potential colleges? Obviously it's not like winning a national science competition or anything, but over the past three summers I've devoted literally my entire summer to coaching kids how to swim for 4-8 hours a day on a strictly volunteer basis. I'd say out of my extracurriculars it ties in with my strongest ones, as I have been a competitive runner and swimmer almost my entire life. Would this be considered at least a strong point? Thank you :)

Thanks and bump :)

Hmm…where do you want to go for college?

Keep up the good work with swimming, but align yourself with another volunteering organization for variety.

Do swim competitively on a school team? That could add to your app.

I’m mainly applying to state schools, etc., but possibly some top tiers too. I have many other activities as well, like the usual (Mu Alpha Theta, NHS, National Spanish Society) but the ones that I’m passionate about are the swim coaching/swimming/running.

Former club swimmer, currently just summer league swimmer.

Main sport is cross country/track, were I’ve qualified for state/nationally ranked meets, and been team captain for two years now along with various other awards.
