Extracurriculars

I love programming, it's probably one of my passions; currently, I'm working on designing and creating an app for the iPhone. My question is: if te app does get approved by apple, is it worth mentioning among my achievements or extracurriculars to adcomms? I consider it a big deal because it's a difficult process but would adcomms be nearly as enthusiastic about it as I am?

Here comes the bump… Bump

Please answer!

I’m a hardcore programmer too and I’ve been programming since I was 10. I’ve done some freelance and some contract work and I put it on my app when I applied this year. I’m not sure if it helped me, but I doubt it could hurt. It shows you’re serious about it. If your app is a success, it would probably supplement your application, I’d imagine.

I would think that you should definitely put it on your app. It sounds impressive, though I can’t say how much since I know almost nothing about programming :P

Yes, absolutely put that on your application or mention it in an essay. Not every extracurricular is related to school, in fact, the best and most unique ones are always done on your own time, with your own resources.

Although creating an itouch app may not be the most gruesome or challenging of tasks, it is certainly an accomplishment and something you spent time on. Even if it doesn’t get approved by Apple, I would still mention it. It relates heavily to your major so there’s no way it could hurt you in the admission process.

Thanks! I’ve been doing preliminary design work on how I want the app to function, and hopefully I’ll be able to start programming by the start of summer.

This sounds like excellent fodder for the Common App Activities essay.

How could I possibly write an essay on this?

It’s just a one time activity, right?

Surely you can write 150 words about something that involves creativity, programming skills, and a not insignificant investment of time.
