Is it better to have about 10-15 clubs that your heavily involved in and passionate for (leadership positions in every single one of them) or is better to just have 3-5 clubs with leadership positions and heavy involvement and passion as well? Assume that one could effectively, fairly, and sanely handle all of these clubs.

In this hypothetical situation you’ve created where everything is equal except for the number of clubs, obviously the first one would be better. In real life, even the most accomplished people don’t usually have leadership positions in more than a couple of clubs, not least because they’re involved in plenty of ECs other than just clubs.

In the hypothetical situation you describe, where the day also has 72 hours, #1 would be better. However, since the day does not have 72 hours, you will need to reassess.

If you’re a junior or senior in high school…I wouldn’t start getting involved in 10-15 clubs at this point. I’m about to be a senior, and I’m making about five clubs MAX my priorities. I’ve continued about two through the course of 4 years, and I have other ECs I’m involved in.

So, in reality, which roughly involves a 7-hour school day plus maybe an hour or two for after school activities, you can’t put a serious, substantial amount of passion and focus into 10-15 clubs haha. Plus, you’ll have academics to worry about. You might think you can handle it all, but trust me, it’s not that easy. Don’t get involved in EVERYTHING.

A bagel won’t taste good if you spread the cream cheese that thin.

@awakeningvenus I love that metaphor. And realistically, you can’t be involved in that many leadership positions and expect to handle them all equally and with care. Take it from a guy who had leadership positions in like 6 clubs, but even that was too many IMO. I felt like in my senior and junior years I would have been much happier if I had prioritized and only became involved in ones I was truly passionate about. There is nothing wrong with being just involved in a club, bu don’t make that commitment unless you are actually ready for it. Remember, you’ll have alot of other stuff going on that you may not foresee thinking about it over the summer.

@awakeningvenus I’m so go to use that one. Thanks.

@awakeningvenus Can’t some people have more cream cheese than others?
(Love the metaphor BTW.)

Yes, but bagels come in many different sizes as well.

You guys are killing the metaphor.
