Extremely confused on my decision to pursue college/which avenue to follow?

I graduated two years ago from high school. I have currently been on and off working for different jobs, testing the air and getting different experience and money saved. So far I haven’t enjoyed anything I’ve been doing. All the money I’ve earned from my jobs has gone to paying for the family’s expenses. We are not by any means stable financially. It has been a struggle, which is why I put off college for so long. But now I really want to go back and try college. My only issue is I have no idea what I want to do.

I don’t have my own vehicle, and my parents are working constantly, so I would not have easy access to any community colleges nearby (even considering a bus, it would be hectic in my city). I would not be able to afford room and board whatsoever so the idea of living on campus is out of the question. I have been considering online education avenues so I could also work a part time job to pay off some of the tuition (my social anxiety disorder that formed in high school also makes online options far more ideal for me, mentally and physically). So far, almost every online option needs you to specify down to the line what major or specialization you want to apply for. I am at a loss. I have no idea what I want to pursue, and I don’t have the luxury or savings to explore different options… Any ideas?

I would definitely need an affordable online college that has financial aid options. I would also prefer a quality college. I love learning and would rather put my money toward an in-depth learning experience rather than writing some notes and getting a degree. Does anyone know what I can do to figure out the major I want to go toward? Or should I just pick one and hope for the best (Although I really don’t want to waste the money to just dance around)?

You’d want to start by clearing all the GE’s first. English, Math, Sciences. After that, move towards taking electives in different areas to see where your interest is in. Of course, you could also find internships + work to decide if that is the area you wish to enter before getting the relevant education. If money is tight, you might want to check your local community college that offers online classes. That way, per credit hour you pay is cheap + you can do it from home. Once you’ve done with your 2 years (AA/AS), you would have a clearer picture of where you want to go. You could transfer into a 4 year college after that to finish your BA/BS.

Some important questions first:

  • have you been enrolled in any college class since you graduated high school?
  • what’s your parents’ combined yearly income (roughly) and how many siblings do you have?
  • what was your unweighted HS GPA?
  • how many honors or Ap classes do you have?
