Eye Wavier?

Does anyone have any experience with eye waivers for Myopia - refractive error greater than - 6.00 diopters (sphere component only)? I think my one eye is like -6.50 and other is 5.75. I got an LOA to USNA and I'm wondering the probability that my wavier will be accepted by DODMERB. It is common for somone to get a wavier for this medical issue?

My son had a different eye problem than the one you described and the condition was hypothetically waivable. He had the primary nomination from our Congresswoman to USNA and as time progressed I got a little nervous that he had not received an appointment. In early March I called the USNA medical folks to find out what the issues were with my son and his waiver. I spoke to a very nice person who told me that although my son's eye condition was hypothetically waivable, that they had not waived the condition for anyone other than a non recruited athlete in years. She told me that if my son was interested in a Service Academy, he should shift his focus to West Point as the vision requirements and waiver possibilities were more favorable than USNA. Not the news I wanted to hear, but I was glad someone was finally candid with me. I was pretty disappointed with the folks in the Admissions Office for not being candid with my son. I believe that his admissions officer knew that a waiver for my son was not going to happen and strung him along. My son is currently at West Point and loving it. My advice, call someone at USNA and find out if the condition is waivable and if so, how frequently is such a waiver given.

FWDAD,
Did your son recieve an Letter of Appointment from USNA or did you find this out early in the process? Awaiting vision waiver also, not correctable to 20/20, recieved appointment last week USNA...another 6 weeks maybe sooner...

My son's vision issue was not as simple as his eyes being correctable to 20/20. It is my understanding that they grant waivers fairly regularly for eyes that are not correctable to 20/20. My son did not receive an LOA from USNA although he was academically and physically qualified. He did however disclose from the very beginning in the process that he had a vision issue. He didn't hear officially until May that he was not going to get a waiver.

So is it your understanding that is why he didn't get an appoinment because he wasn't going to get the waiver?

titleistgolf10,

I suggest that you post at United States of America Service Academy Forums - Powered by vBulletin, DoDMERB section. There is a former DoDMERB worker there that is familiar with most medical issues. He usually replies in less than 24 hours. I have seen quite a few vision issues that he has responded to.

Good Luck!

thanks will do

Yes. He was a national merit semi-finalist with an almost perfect SAT score. He also lettered four years in soccer (co-captain his senior year) and three years in football (all State one year).

The suggestion about the other site is a good one. You won't be disappointed.
