<p>I'm going to get a C on a math course. Since i cant stand to have this grade on my transcript, I'm going to ask for the instructor to give me an F, so i could retake the class next semester.</p>
<p>The question is: if I'm applying for admission as a transfer student for fall 2011 (the application deadline is during fall 2010 semester) , does an F have an effect on the application, even though they see I'm retaking the class (retaking the class in fall 2010)?
The counselor said this shouldn't be a problem but I'm not sure...</p>

<p>i would NOT go for an F instead of a C. the F will severely drop your GPA. it’s better to just take the C and then take the class again. it won’t replace the C, but you will save your GPA which the ad committee will certainly look at.</p>
<p>even if you explain that you took the F to retake the class, the sends a message to the admission committee that you are a grade grubber…</p>
<p>I recieved an F for a class this past fall semester but am retaking it this fall. Lets just say it screwed my average up so bad, I lost one of my scholarships and couldn’t transfer out of my CC. Like hyperlite said, take the C then retake the class.</p>
<p>Unless i receive an F, i cannot retake the class. I understand that it is going to screw my gpa, but hopefully only temporary, since once i retake it (and hopefully get a good grade) it will replace the F and eventually the gpa will be better than with a C on it. </p>
<p>This is why im asking if this “gap” of applying with a lower gpa due to an F, is going to automatically rule me out, even though im retaking the same class that gave me an F. without this F im expecting about 3.4 gpa.</p>
<p>Is it too late to take the W? I have a couple F’s on my transcript from a year ago and I re-took them. I’m glad they were F’s becauseI was able to retake them and have a high GPA. Had they been C’s I would be unable to retake them and have a lower GPA.</p>
<p>i would expect your GPA to drop from a 3.4 to at 3.0 on a best case scenario. it may even drop way more–and if you start to get into 2.9 territory that looks pretty bad on a transfer application. colleges want to see an upward trend in GPA over the semesters. </p>
<p>also, are you sure it will replace the F? how would they be able to do that on your transcript? if you retake the class in the fall, does the grade show up under the fall semester or the spring? if for some reason the course shows up blank in the semester you took the F (after you retake it), that will be weird.</p>
<p>bottom line: i would just take the C. even if you retake the course, the F will look absolutely awful on your transcript in the meantime AND screw your GPA. colleges will evaluate your app based on the grades you SUBMIT. even if you are retaking the class and it’s in progress by application time, the most colleges would ask for is a mid-term report, but this is just to get an idea of how the semester is going. </p>
<p>if you can somehow retake the class BEFORE applying, that could work…but transfer admissions are already really competitive. </p>
<p>if you’re unsure - you can also call a few of the schools you are looking to apply to and ask what they would prefer. who knows, they may prefer you retake it.</p>
<p>I might have to retake the course during summer. That would really suck cuz that means i cant come back home for summer and i already have a ticket and all. A good idea is to check with the schools i want to apply to see what they say.

<p>You may also see if you can take the course near wherever you live over the summer as long as the course transfers over.
I failed Calc my first semester, re took it and got a C. Although I applied my sophomore yr, the F was still on my transcript(although it didnt factor with the GPA).</p>
