Is Hartford a good university? And they are giving me $68k for 4 years… I’m coming from buffalo ny area so how are the dorms?
I personally don’t like University of Hartford. The campus is small but nice. The class size is pretty small. The dorms are also small but they are not that bad. I go to University of Hartford almost everyday. So, if you have any questions, I can most likely answer them. @thisizmyyear2016
@Peoples thanks.
my major is biology in the pre med track. I haven’t been on campus yet but from pictures it looks small and…not exactly pretty but I mean it’s fine.
So for dorming, I’ll probably have to dorm, how small is small? If I do come, I might just get my own room.
Do you know how great the pre med/sciences are at uhart? And the clubs / area of Hartford? Safety wise. There’s druggies and people getting high everyone so that’s like whatever but it’s not terrible is it?
Also it’s confusing on how they sent my financial award letter. It says it’s around $56k per year but I got $68k per year. Then on the fact sheet personalized for me it says $22k is given to me as a grant so net pay is $34k. And financial aid is $11k. According to this I only need to pay $3k per year and that sounds too cheap to be true…
**Sorry I got 68k for four years as a scholarship
So the Hartford area is good though right? Like restaurants, entertainment, movies, etc…I hate how you can’t post pictures on this but okay I listed it below:
List of awards: Total
UH ALUMNI AWARD. $17,000
UH UNIVERSITY GRANT $5,000
DL SUBSIDIZED STAFFORD LOAN $3500
DL UNSUBSIDIZED STAFFORD LOAN $2,000
Total financial assistance: $27,500
(Separate fianance shopping sheet they sent):
Cost of attendance: $53208
Grants/scholarships: $22,000
Net cost: $31208
Loans (listed above)
Family contribution: $11,683
everything is per year*
So according to this, how much will I have to pay per year? I think it’s around $3000 per year for me and I won’t need the 2 loans listed above. But if I do use them, and I need to pay back interest, how much will I be paying back??
Thank you everyone and I hope if I go here I’ll see you lovely people!
The Hartford area is okay. The campus is in downtown Hartford, so it is a but ghetto. If you go a little far from the campus you can find pretty much everything. Hartford has a great transit system, so if you don’t have a car that won’t be a problem.
This is the amount you will have to pay for your freshman year. Do you have $31,000 to be able to pay out of pocket?
You can take $5500 in Direct Loans to help pay this.
How do you figure it would only be $3000 a year for you?
I can’t answer anything about the Hartford area, I have never been there and neither have most people posting here. But you shouldn’t ask about that in the financial aid forum. Focus here on costs only. Go see if there is a forum for that college to ask.
UH cost estimates are PER YEAR, I have no idea either how you think your cost is only 3k when it is or you don’t have x that and that you don’t have to take those loans.
It costs 53,208 PER YEAR for tuition/fees, room/board, books, and estimated transportation and personal expense.
They are giving you 22,000 per year in ‘gift’ money that does not have to be paid back.
This means that the real cost is 31,208 PER YEAR. You can only meet part of that by the stafford loan.
They are saying you can take loans in your name for 5,500 PER YEAR (which will increase to 7,500 by Sr year). The federal govt will pay the interest on the subsidized part, but the other part will accrue interest. So my calculations above are fairly correct, it will just be a bit more because of the unsubsidized portion.
But your family has to pay all the rest. So if you take the ‘rest’ which is 31,208 and subtract the loan part you are left with having to pay (31,208-5,500) 25,708 per year. Did Dad agree to pay that?
Hartford thinks that your family contribution should only be 11,683 but they did not give you enough aid to allow that. Can you see that your were GAPPED? They gave you less aid than they think is right, but they don’t have enough to give you to make the difference.
It would be $19 k I believe. I’m gonna talk next week with the advisor. This is my backup tho so we will see
Anything else I should know about Hartford?
This is what happens when another poster sort of high jacks a thread. To the OP…what is your financial aid package?
I am VERY familiar with the University of Hartford. My DH is an engineering grad. Both of my kids did are college orchestra program there. We spent a LOT of time at they university.
The school is located on the Hartford/Bloomfield/West Hartford line. There is really nothing within walking distance of the campus. No shops, clubs, etc. there is a lot in West Hartford that is easily accessible by car…and very close. The businesses close by in Hartford are not in the best area. There are things to do in Hartford…concerts, food, etc. but again…you would need a car.
U Hart does have things going on on campus.
The dorms are dorms. They are not palaces. To be honest, I’ve seen much worse dorms at many other schools.
Oh no, lol it’s $19k per year.
I saw pic of the univ and not sure how I feel bout it.
It’s really old. Wat reputation does it have for Connecticut people?
University of Hartford is a private university. It has a fine engineering program, good music and art programs. To be honest, don’t know anything about the rest of the school.
It is in a suburban location that borders Hartford. Many instate residents would not spend the money it costs to attend…except maybe for the Hartt School (music), art, or engineering.
The school does give decent merit aid to higher achieving students. But even with that, it is costly. In terms of quality, the public universities here in CT are all in par or better than UHart. But it’s easier to get acceoted to UHart than to UConn main campus.
I’m not sure exactly what you want to know.
You can PM me with specific questions if you would like.
So if I want to go to medical, which I do, this school I shouldn’t look into your saying?
Because honestly I don’t want to go there when the students suck and same with teachers and it’s the most ghetto and cheap quality school ya know?
Please don’t put words in my mouth. I NEVER said the school sucks or that the students suck…or that it’s in the ghetto. None of those things are true. While it abuts Hartford, it is located in Weat Hartford and Bloomfield. The area where the college is actually located is nice…and suburban.
You asked about proximity to Hartford…and I said…you will need a car, something you can’t afford.
For medical school…you need to get outstanding grades in the requisite courses to apply to med school AND a top MCAT score.
You could do that at University of Hartford.
But if you plan to go to med school…you really want minimal undergrad debt…and that is something you won’t have from UHart.
It’s a fine school. Not Yale, but fine.
I might be dense, but if you are from Buffalo NY and want to study biology, premed then why not SUNY Buffalo? Wouldn’t that be less than $30k for an instate student? And it’s an established research university with a good reputation. Then why are you so focused on Hartford?
If you want to go to med school, you don’t need another $120,000 in debt just from undergrad.
Have you heard back from U Buffalo yet? On another thread you said they were waiting to see your grades.
No omg sorry I didn’t mean that in an awful way. I just meant that comparatively that other people here have said its not that great compared to other schools since the majority of the resident living there would much rather go someplace else than stay there ya know?
It’s probably a good school for sure but I meant for myself as a pre med bio major going to an art school, would it be the best for me?
