Does anyone know when Rice '09 students will receive email accounts so that we can get on facebook?

thanks.

O-week in August.

Oh yeah and if anyone applied to UF you can use your ISIS ID they gave you to create an email account. It works but facebook assumes your going to UF, whatever though.

haha i did that with texas a&m

I don't mean to be a stick in the mud, but creating an e-mail account at a university you will not be attending -- even if the system lets you -- may be considered a theft of services. That is, unless you've been explicitly informed that you're allowed to create such an account as an applicant.

I'd strongly suggest you discontinue use of other universities' information technology resources and wait until you're allowed to create an Owlnet account at Rice. The best course of action would be to e-mail the postmaster@ account and explain that you will not need the account and how you obtained it without being officially enrolled.

I worked for Rice's IT department and I assure you this is not something universities take lightly.

at a&m, you had that email address all through the application process.

the only angle that makes this situation a "theft of services" (from a reasonable standpoint) is that having an email account uses their servers, which is basically irrelevant because I had forwarded the one email ive ever gotten (for facebook confirmation). i assume mister too does not use it regularly, so even if they monitored our activity, there would be essentially nothing to see. these are computer services and if they want us out, they will delete our <1mb existence.

It doesn't matter how frequently you use the system, it's theft of services because in most cases what we're talking about is an unauthorized account. (Just because a computer lets you register and log in doesn't mean you're actually supposed or allowed to do so.) It's an illegal act, regardless of how innocent your actions, insignificant your use, or how easy it was to obtain.

In the A&M case, it sounds like it's a valid use if they promoted & used the address to correspond with you during the application process. Unless the other school(s) mentioned explicitly or demonstratively approved of such a use, you might be in a legal gray area.

This will be my last post on the subject; I'm saying this because I don't want anyone here to get in trouble -- as unlikely as that may seem. Any other concerns can be addressed to me in PM.

If they want you out (and they do/will), they will delete your <1MB existence. But that's not the point. Just because you can doesn't mean you should and it certainly doesn't make it automatically "right." In this case, there are laws that could land you in trouble if they were to persue it. You're assuming that they know how easy it is to get an account and don't look upon it as a breach of their security (which in many cases, it is). They might not know, and exploiting that flaw could be looked upon very poorly. You can't get your Rice account yet and for good reason -- your Owlnet account unlocks many restricted Rice resources that non-students shouldn't be able to access. Other universities have similar restrictions in place.

You're adults. Your choice. Your risk.

Thanks for the warning, wrprice. I already terminated even being at facebook under a&m. I imagine most people aren't trying this anyway.

I got a Rice Facebook account today. Cool beans.

how'd you do that?

I just used the link:

Click Continue and copy and paste the student# they give you in the CE email.

can we do that already? hope it doesnt get you or me in trouble.

It worked. What are they going to do, take my email account away and make me apply for another one?

I think 7 or 8 other Rice '09ers have facebook already, too. Rice will have to send us all to jail.

so how do you get the email for facebook? does it forward to your external address?

Yep. It took a day or so, but it eventually forwards the confirmation email to your external address.

ohhh so i still have to wait. haha.
ill be patient...

wait....this confirmation email....do you mean for facebook or something from the rice computer system?

For facebook.
