Factors in Penn Admissions

I found this chart. How accurate do you think it is?

Factors in admissions:

Very Important: Secondary School Record, Recommendations, Character/Personal Qualities

Important: Standardized Tests, Essay, Extracurricular Activities

Considered: Class Rank, Interview, Volunteer Work, Particular Talent/Ability, Geographic Residence, Relation with Alumnus, Ethnicity

Not Considered: Religious Affiliation/Commitment, State Residency

Source; collegedata.com

fairly accurate as far as I have read from other sources...

state residency IS considered, but its not a make or break decision thing

I like class rank only being under 'considered.'

And how do they really assess your character and personal qualities?

Primarily through essays and recommendations.

yea I agree with ns347, state residency is DEFINTELY considered! They want geographic diversity.
Wait, a second, geographic residence is considered, but State residency is not? What???

I'm surprised Recommendations are very important! I always saw them as not being reliable info., since the teacher is most likely going to brag about the student no matter what.

if you waive your right to see them, then they can be rly valuable sources of info b/c then they can be REALLY honest.

^ That's not true for all students. I think they look for a consistency throughout all the letters a student gets.

I didn't waive my right. Is that bad?

yea but during the information session, I heard that besides ur transcript and SAT's, essays is the most important b/c u can express urself and its the only part of the application that you can control.

I know how UPenn suggests 4 years of language as do most other schools, but if I only have three (because I'm really not a language person) does that actually automatically eliminate me?

no, it doesn't lollerpants.

Whew, thanks.

yea I took spanish 2, 3, and 4...I'm hoping they will count those 3 as 4 b/c in reality it is upto spanish 4. I took spanish 1 in middle school

I have been taking spanish since 7th grade!

me too...I took it for 6 weeks in 6th grade

Well I only took Spanish I --> III because of the fact that if I took anymore my rank would've plummeted from one of the highest to a mediocre one so I didn't think it was really worth it. So I was just hoping that that wouldn't just kill me off or anything.

State Residency = Living in Pennsylvania

It does not mean that you live in North Dakota, so you will add to the geographical diversity. Living in Pennsylvania will not increase your chances like living in Michigan will improve your chances at UMich.
