Bowdoin was nice enough to offer me a summer stipend by declaring me a Faculty Scholar. They called it the highest honor. Do most people get this?

No, though I think most people who apply for summer fellowships end up getting them. It is nice, however, to have that as a summer job option, more or less, for some summer here.

i've never heard of this before

is it availible for frosh?

I got one in my acceptance packet. It certainly is a nice bonus.

it's actually a huge honor--so congratulations! in my class (2010) they only offered 19 people the opportunity. what i learned when i got to school was that it can be used towards anything educational, as long as its under $3000. for an example, i'm either going to do an art history backpacking tour of italy or spend 3 months teaching english in india. its really up to you--and when you get to school you will meet with an adviser to start thinking about what you would like to do with it.

Yeah, I would say about 20-25 people per class are made Faculty Scholars (I remember finding out right when I received my acceptance, way back in the spring of 2004). They will basically let you use the $3000 towards anything having to do with your academic goals, as cuddlepancake was saying... I have friends who have used it to travel Europe during their spring break while they were abroad, I've heard of people exploring art museums in Paris and London, someone else used it to go make a giant mural in NYC, and I know of someone who used it to take guitar lessons. Also, I'm under the impression that if you use it during the summer, they will also adjust your financial aid package slightly to compensate for the fact that you won't be necessarily making the same amount of money that would have been expected as part of your "summer contribution" (assuming that you are on some sort of financial aid).

I have met with the CPC a few times this past year about how I plan on using mine (I'm a rising senior at Bowdoin), but I still haven't decided yet. I'll be needing to use it before I graduate though, because it can't be used the summer after senior year. I've had other summer opportunities that have kept me from using it up until this point, so right now my tentative plan is to come up with some cool travel proposal for either winter break or spring break.

Seeing as you're an incoming freshman though, you'll have plenty of time to figure out what you might want to use it for. :)
