Along with my acceptance letter, I received a letter notifying me that I had been chosen to receive a Russuwrm Scholarship, which guarantees my “full calculated financial need will be met with grant assistance and a modest term-time job expectation. Your aid package will not contain a student loan, giving you the opportunity to graduate from Bowdoin free of debt.” Though, I’m still waiting on my financial aid package. I couldn’t find any information about this scholarship on Bowdoin’s website, but I had some questions: Is this scholarship awarded to anyone who demonstrates financial need? Will the grants and job cover most expenses outside of my family’s EFC?

Thanks for any possible info. I’ll probably email the financial aid dept. w/ my questions, as well.

WAIT, when did u get ur acceptance letter? Was this an ED? Or RD? I hadn't known anyone had gotten RD letters yet...

I know nothing about the scholarship though, but if you have a very low EFC, it's likely that it is more of a financial aid than merit package. But, if your EFC wasn't particularly low and you had what could be considered amazing stats for Bowdoin, then it might be merit. Just my assuption though.

Yeah, I was an rd early write. They were missing some fin aid info, so I sent that off the same day I got the acceptance. I really don't think my stats are great (I was surprised that i was actually accepted to Bowdoin). EFC is approximately 10k, so I was curious to know if most (or all) students w/ need received this scholarship.Rather anxious to see my fin aid package and to see how this scholarship affects it.

wow congrats coldrising! i also was accepted early write. i was missing my tax forms so i had to fax those in. fa is a big concern for me considering that my EFC is a thousand...>_<

John Russwurm was one of the very first African Americans to graduate from college in the US. He graduated from Bowdon in 1826, and the building housing African studies is named after him. The Russwurm Scholarships are awarded only to African American students at Bowdoin.

Interesting - in the past the Russwurm scholarships have been earmarked for African Americans but, based on your experience, it sounds as though eligibility has been expanded to include other minorities.

Hmm my EFC is 10k and I'm also an African American. I'd really like to attend Bowdoin and I got a great package, but 16k is still too much to make up for me. I'm going to try with outside scholarships but I didn't hear a lot about Russwurm Scholarships. Maybe they used my estimated 2005 info, but I know I sent them updated financial aid information much earlier that they should have included it. I know they said that in May they finalize all awards, but if there isn't a significant change I don't know how I could qualify for such an award. I really don't want to have to graduate with a lot of debt! :(
