Okay so I got accepted into Wayne State College in Nebraska for the whole year tuition is 15k out of state tuition which is cheaper than the schools I wanted to go to in California. When i filled out my FASFA information my family's estimated contribution was 0000. Their gross income was negative 25k. When I received my financial aid package from Wayne I got 5600 in a Pell Grant and the Stafford Loan which leaves me 2500 short and that's not counting expenses to get up there. I tried talking to my school financial aid office and they keep telling me to get have my parents take out a loan in their name when they cannot afford it. What I'm trying to find out is what are my options? I find it strange with an estimated family contribution was 0000 that I didn't get qualify for a Perkins Loan or a work study program. Any help would be appreciated. I would be going to school full time there taking 15 units if that matters at all.

Most schools do not meet the need 100%.
Try get a summer job.

I have a summer job just not getting help from my parents so I have to pay my own expensives including rent. I thought with a EFC of 0000 shouldn’t I qualify for the work study program?

Work study money is limited. Each school gets an allotment of dollars for work, study. Did submit your FAFSA immediately after January 1?

Call the school. Some times they have students who do not enroll and work study or Perkins funds become available.

Are you saying that you are paying rent this summer…like right now? If so, do you have any relatives who might allow you to live with them in exchange for some chores?

Trying to get in touch an Uncle I haven’t talked to in a couple years to see if that’s possible. My whole family against me going to college they don’t think I deserve it. And thank you Thumper I did not know that I might be able to get funds that other students do not claim.

The programs are not like Pell and direct loans where you get them automatically if you qualify. A school gets a very limited amount of $$$s for WS and Perkins. They set their own criteria for awarding the funds but generally have more students who qualify than they have funds. My daughter got WS and Perkins some years and not others. Her school’s funding funding ran out very early and even though we filed FAFSA early, they sometimes ran out of funds before getting to her FAFSA. If the school says they have no more funds in those programs, or that you don’t qualify according to their criteria, there is nothing you can do.

Is the direct loan the stafford loan?

Direct loan = Stafford loan
