FAFSA and Common App Permanent Address

Hey everybody,

My parents are divorced and I listed this on my common app. I said that I make my permanent home with my Dad on my app because at that time I had been living mainly with him but since originally submitting this I have lived with my Mom. I was wondering if on my FAFSA I could list my permanent address as my Mom or would this raise a red-flag. My mom makes less than my Dad and I don't know if that affects this. Also, there isn't any way to update this info on the common app is there?

I don’t know if this will be a problem but I worked for the gov’t for 20+ years and work with the gov’t in my line of work. It is NEVER a good idea for data linking back to one person to not match. Just my 2 cents. And the FAFSA is based on who you lived with most in 2012.

It won’t be a major problem. With FAFSA, the parent you live with the most is the one you should use. It there is an advantage to pick one over the other, make sure you have a case for that if asked. But you could be a dependent of the other for tax purposes, the divorce decree could have primary custody for the other, and yes, you could use the other’s place as a permanent address. It happens all of the time. I know kids whose NCP for all purposed paid the bills, so his place was where they were sent. So I don’t think it will raise big flags. It is possible if you are selected for verification or audit they ask, so be prepared for this, but I really don’t think you will be so selected BECAUSE of that.

For FAFSA, the parent financial info is required to be the parent you lived with most over the last 12 months. That sounds like your dad. If you recently moved in with your mom and that is your mailing address now, use it. Looking at my kid’s SAR I don’t see that FAFSA asks for parent address so there really isn’t a way for them to know the mailing address and parent financial info aren’t the same parent. But it sounds like you need to use your dad’s financial info.

Thanks everybody. I think I’m just going to list my Dad
