How does FAFSA know if you lie about a misdemeanor drug charge?
Don’t lie on the FAFSA. You will certify that you are not lying, so don’t.
Here is the full text of the question: Have you been convicted for the possession or sale of illegal drugs for an offense that occurred while you were receiving federal student aid (such as grants, loans or work-study)?
Answer “No” if you have never received federal student aid or if you have never had a drug conviction for an offense that occurred while receiving federal student aid. If you have a drug conviction for an offense that occurred while you were receiving federal student aid, answer “Yes,” but complete and submit this application, and we will mail you a worksheet to help you determine if your conviction affects your eligibility for aid.
If you were not convicted while receiving federal aid, you answer no. If you were convicted while receiving federal aid, you may or may not be prohibited from receiving aid - the worksheet will help you determine your eligibility.
When you complete the worksheet, you will get a number:
“1” means your eligibility for federal student aid is not affected by question 23.
“2” means your drug conviction(s) affect eligibility for federal student aid for part of this school year. To receive federal student aid, you need to tell the financial aid office at your college your “eligibility date” from question 11 on this worksheet. You can become eligible earlier in the school year if you complete an acceptable drug rehabilitation program or pass two unannounced drug tests administered by an acceptable drug rehabilitation program. Even if you are not eligible for federal student aid, you may still be eligible for aid from your state or college.
“3” means you are not eligible for federal student aid for this school year unless you complete an acceptable drug rehabilitation program or pass two unannounced drug tests administered by an acceptable drug rehabilitation program. Even if you are not eligible for federal student aid, you may still be eligible for aid from your state or college.
Arrests are reported to the FBI for uniform crime statistics. I would be really surprised if the FAFSA folks could not easily run a name through a computer and see if an applicant has been charged with something. I’d hate to be charged with falsifying a government document or obtaining money through fraudulent means. It might make college irrelevant for a while.
Thanks everyone!! I thought so I’ll relay the info!
Do not be discouraed by such terrible information such as OspreyCV22 gave If this was so I would not have been going to my college for 3 years. I have a felony. Most colleges will accept you into the college wth having charges depending on what the charges are.
Drug charges may be an issue so are violent crimes. But if you disclose them to te school you may have chance still. As mentioned for FASFA purposes Kelsmom’s responces are more correct than someone who seems to be not wating to see some who has ever comited a crime suceed.
Ok now for the quote by OspreyCV22 of arrests being reported to the FBI. That is not true at all because some people are just arrested and never charged. Yes, the Arest is most likely going to be there but through the FBI. Your crime record with be pulled up by the state you live in. Unless you commited a Federal drug charge than that would be in the federal system.Clearly this commenter has FBI confused with a nationwide backround. And even if the are gathering up arrest info that would be for something else and not the record itself unless it is a federal charge. Also these kind of backround checks will cost money to do and if it has been sealed they will need even more money to disclose it
Keep in mind I was accepted because my charges did not involve drugs at all.Every case is different from the other one.
Another great suggestion for you is depending on your charges and circumstances there is such a thing as sealng and expunging your record. I ave alreadybeen aproved for sealing now I have to wait 10 years to expunge. It does cost money and I recomnd a lawyer if you do not understnad the process. This means that your record will be not be on The websites for public view.Only police officers and law makers can see your record
I really hope that this infomation was helpful to you and I wish you luck in your future.
