fafsa / calgrant award

my EFC of $2,632.

i'm from california, and qualify for Calgrant (gpa >3.3, or whatever the requirement is..).

having only applied to UCs (Berkeley, LA, SD, and SB), is there any way to reasonably estimate how much my award will be? are there any other factors to take into account?

i'm trying to map out living situations for each possibility to be as prepared and hassle free as possible for next year.

thanks.

CalGrant is around $8000
Pell would be in the $2500 range for you
Maybe ACG/SMART grant if you qualify, which starts small and grows to $4000 each of your last two years
Did you apply for an alumni scholarship? That would be $1500
Otherwise there could be some small Berkeley scholarships and the rest loans

weird.
according to aid calculators (Financial Aid Estimator for the Univeristy of California, Berkeley - Main), i'll be getting around 15,000.
i only made this post, because i'm not exactly sure how the calgrant factors in, or whether it's included in the aid calculator's calculation, or how accurate it is, etc.

2500 pell grant?
how'd you come up with that number?

btw, total estimated need for (let's say) UCB is around $26k.

also, out of curiosity, is my EFC considered low? how low?

one last thing!

if i've made a little money tutoring and babysitting over the past year (probably between $600 - $1,000), should i report it on FAFSA where it asks for "Student's Other Untaxed Income or Benefits?"

since

We applied to three of those four UC's several years ago, with a similar EFC. Average COA then was about 23K, but varied a bit between each of the campuses.

The financial aid offers varied considerably between the UC's. One, UCLA, met full need (covered the full difference between EFC and COA with a combination of Grants (fed, state, and university), Stafford loan, and work study. The other campuses "gapped" between 3 and 5K, as I recall.

If you're sure of your EFC-- I'd expect similar offers (meeting most, but not all need) from these campuses.

I looked at the Cal calculator-- IMO, it doesn't ask enough detailed questions to be very helpful.

Yes, your EFC is relatively low, so you'll be eligible for considerable financial aid.

Finally, I'd suggest that you don't think in these terms:

"i'll be getting around 15,000..."

You won't be getting a check, most likely. You'll be getting a great education, but the financial aid funds will go to the school, for the most part. Best to think in terms of what each school will end up costing you and your family.

Yeah- you should report the tutoring income on FAFSA, even though you probably don't have to file a tax return. You're right, it won't impact your EFC or the aid, and better to be correct.

In very general terms, it seems like the UC financial aid packages for my children were approx $5K in loans and $4 - $5K in work study. The rest were in grants/scholarships. This is in addition to our EFC.

The Pell is going to be just over $5000, so in estimating, I took 5200- your EFC 2600. That is not precisely how it works, but I am just estimating.

Round numbers are sufficient for a ball park estimate, but of that $15k you will have a loan component and a work study component. Work study is all on you, you need to find the job and you get the money as you work, not up front, so you won't likely use it for housing or books, maybe for food & personal.

Sorry, in my mind loans are not aid, so I was giving you the GRANT aid, not the self help aid, you are right, when you aid loans & WS it would be higher.

I hope you applied for Alumni!!

You might Google ACG and check the requirements to see if you likely qualify, the ACG is for Pell grant qualifiers, and depends on your HS work, therefore it is slow to show up your first term.

The ACG changes to a SMART grant the last 2 years, depending on your major, it is only for the math/science realm

if i don't report the untaxed income, what are the odds that it'll come back to bite me in the ass?

i'm only worried about the deadline.. i submitted a correction today, it'll take three days to go through, and i can't make another correction until the first has been processed.

bump..........

If you are verified, you'd like to ensure your numbers are real and verifiable.

"if i don't report the untaxed income, what are the odds that it'll come back to bite me in the ass?"

Odds are small, IMO. But do the right thing-- because it's the right thing to do. And you don't want to falsify your FAFSA by not reporting income. Don't start your college career by falsifying federal forms, ya know?

I thought the GPA had to be over 3.0?
