So my daughter goes to out of state college (Belmont University). We file a FAFSA and she is receiving loans, but because college is out of state she is not getting CAL Grants. Belmont gives there own grants.
My question is once she finishes her undergraduate degree if she were to come home to California and go to a CSU could she then still get financial aid/CAL grant to get her masters? Middle class scholarship as well?
This is a long way off, but she is talking masters and I am in over my head just for the undergraduate degree.
Thanks,
Connie
I have no idea how CAL grants and the like work for grad school [there are very knowledgeable people on such issues here, and I hope they will chime in], but I just want to caution you to be VERY careful that she does nothing to endanger her status as a California resident. D was born here, graduated from high school here, was registered to vote here, only ever had a California driver’s license – and UC still made her a non-resident for graduate school because she lived [with her girlfriend, who had just started med school] and worked [tutoring and substitute teaching gigs] in New York State for the year after graduating from college while she was applying to grad school [because writing her honors thesis and applying to grad school at the same time would have been crazy]. It didn’t really matter to her or us because her fellowship meant it was just a matter of how much money got shifted from one UC account to another, but it convinced me that UC will screw you on this issue given the slightest opportunity. I have no reason to think that the CSU administration is any different. Forewarned is forearmed. Good luck, ATS
@Gumbymom
I thought Calgrant were for undergrad only and also had to be taken within a certain number of years of HS graduation…am I wrong?
I thought the middle class scholarship was for undergrad only also.
Hoping the CA experts can weigh in.
@fan4luc financial aid for grad school is very different than financial aid for undergrad school.
Cal Grants can not be used for grad school.

They don’t try to screw you, but have fixed rules about in-state residency. OP, for this aspect, you can start here
https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/california-residency-for-tuition-purposes
For UC, the comprehensive detail (vs how individual colleges may state it,) is given by UCOP, (Office of the President.)
Agree with @Mwfan1921 and @thumper1. According to the link posted by @Mwfan1921, the Cal grant can only be used for Undergraduate studies along with the Middle Class scholarship.

Middle Class Scholarship
The Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) is a program that provides undergraduate students with family incomes up to $177,000* and a maximum annual household asset amount of $177,000,* a scholarship to attend University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU) campuses
Thanks everyone. You answered my question. I was hoping for a different answer, but at least know the answer.
