I would appreciate your opinion. I received this email notification today:

"A 2013-2014 FAFSA Correction for XXX YYYYY was processed on MARCH 21, 2013.
What Happens Next
- The student was notified of the status of their application and whether there are any issues that need to be resolved.
- The application information was sent to the school(s) listed on the application.
- The school(s) will use the application information to determine what aid the student may be eligible to receive."

Well, we didn't request any correction. The correction history in my son's FAFSA account states that the correction was submitted by "college" on 03/21/2013. And now the corrected FAFSA was sent to all the schools again.

I compared the current SAR to the previous SAR, and they seem to be identical. Maybe I'm not noticing something. This is just strange. I am wondering what it means and how a college can make corrections on someone's FAFSA.

Kelsmom will be able to explain this.

In the meantime, you might want to check with the school that submitted the change, and ask them what they changed!

If a college sees a mistake on FAFSA, they can and will correct it. You don’t have to request it.

Colleges make corrections all the time. Look again at every single line - chances are, there is some small update (maybe year in school or degree pursued?). If not, it could be that a change was made by mistake, then changed back - prompting what seems like a change but is actually not. And if the school makes a change, it usually does go to all schools on that transaction.

You can always call the FAFSA help line & see if they will tell you what change was made. Any of the schools on that FAFSA transaction can tell you, too - but it is easiest if you find the school that made the change and ask them. Otherwise, another school would have to log into the federal system to see the change made, and not all aid officers in some offices have this access.

kelsmom,
thank you so much! I’ll check the SARs again very carefully. Don’t know how to find out which school made the change. FAFSA says the correction was submitted by"college".

well, I found the correction by whatever picky college! The last 3 digits of one parent’s income from work were changed from 400 to 399. – It’s 399.95 on the W2!
I know this sounds silly, but should I correct it back to 400? Probably not…
I had no idea colleges could change FAFSA! What if they are wrong?

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Can’t understand why they would have changed it. For taxes, $399.95 rounds to $400, not $399!
