I'm applying to several schools, and sending two batches of the FAFSA to them. I'm wondering if schools can see what other schools the FAFSA was sent to.

Also, can I send the FAFSA NOW with '06 data, then update it and send it again with '07 data later?

The 6 schools listed on each FAFSA will be able to see each other.

Do not submit the FAFSA with 06 tax data unless it is extremely close to your current estimates. It is MUCH better to estimate the 2007 tax information than use outdated informtion, as several changes to the 2007 tax return were made.

I beg to differ, Nikkii. When I called FAFSA last year to ask them this specific question, the person on the line said that schools cannot see all the schools to whom the FAFSA report (SAR) goes to. Maybe s/he was wrong-- don't remember who it was-- but that person was adamant that each school could only see its specific applicants. S/he explained to me the process, and at the time it made sense. I can't remember details at the moment. The explanation included the part of the process where students have to add more reports than there is room for on the application.

School 1 CAN see schools 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6....school 2 CAN see schools 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, and so on down the line. I am a Financial Aid Administrator's and look at FAFSA's all the time. I can see the other 5 schools listed on each of the FAFSA's I receive in my office. Now, if you list 12 schools in all....I can only see the 5 which are on the same transaction as my institution's code is listed.

Don't know who you spoke to....but they must not have understood your question, because Financial Aid Offices have had this ability for quite some time. In fact, many give preferential treatment to students who listed their school in the #1 spot.

Nik,
That's what I heard last year and many advised to list schools in alphabetical order to try to keep from showing favorites. Am I correct to assume that while FA offices can see the other schools, that Admissions (for need blind schools) is separate and they do not look at the FAFSA/Profile schools listed?

so, for the application questions that ask "to what other schools are you applying?", since they can already see it on the fafsa, should i just be honest? or should i leave it blank?

For one of my schools, I didn't list all of the other schools I'm applying to.

And, by seeing other schools I'm applying to, (a lot of competitors), will this affect my admissions? Do the adcoms see the other schools or just the FA staff?

While Alpha order is what is advised by many, some schools I have spoken with don't take that into consideration...but it is a chance one takes when they are trying to find the best school within their budget. In regards to admissions offices...some schools do allow the admissions offices to view FAFSA's...some don't. Some may claim they don't, but secretly do....it's really difficult to say without having worked at that specific institution.

For example, students applying to the traditional program at my instutition...their FAFSA's are seen by admissions. Students who apply to the accelerated adult program....no one but financial aid administrators view the FAFSA. Just within one institution, you can see how differently things are treated, so you can imagine how different it can be with other schools.

Wow. If I don't get into a school because they see I'm applying to others on my FAFSA form I will lose all respect in the college admissions process.

We're overachieving, peer leading, community serving, grade getting young adults and some colleges expect us to apply to ONLY their college? We work that hard for a chance at admissions, but are supposed to be stupid enough to lower our odds towards a dream college and only apply to ONE in fear we won't get admitted because they can see we've tried to help our chances? That doesn't sit right with me.

I'm so confused. So is ABC order not advised? It just so happens that my least favorite school is the first to come in the alphabet. This isn't cool.

is it possible to send the fafsa to a couple schools, then go back and send it to a few more, and so on? What about making a minute change after sending it to a couple schools, and then sending it to a few more, then another minute change (like $1 here or there), and then sending to a few more, etc.
