Okay! I know the federal deadline is June 30th. My state deadline is 30 days after the semester starts. I originally filed out the fafsa before the 30 day deadline but my dad used incredibly inaccurate info because he didn’t have his taxes done in order to “just get it done”. The fafsa then was procrastinated on by him for eleven months. I got independent status last week and am now wondering: since the fafsa was actually filled out before that 30 day deadline, even though it was inaccurate financial information and I was considered a dependent on the fafsa at the time, can I still get state funding now as a dependent?
I meant can I still get state funding now as an independent student!
What school year are you talking about, the one that is just about to end? Did they process the fafsa with the incorrect information? If not, it probably wasn’t filed at all. If you start a fafsa but don’t complete it by something like 30 days, the saved information is lost and you have to start again. If you did complete it, wouldn’t you have received your financial aid by now?
What exactly does this mean? what is the basis for you becoming an independent student?
So you filed FAFSA for the 2016/17 school year in September/October of 2016, and your dad didn’t have his 2015 taxes done yet? Did you submit this FAFSA to your school? Did you correct it later?
Did you also file a 2017/18 FAFSA for next school year? If you are indeed independent because of age or another qualified condition, then you could file that now with only your income.
I thought that aid like loans can only be received before the school year is over. Can Pell and state aid be received after the school year is over, but aid deadline has not been reached?
The 2016-2017 FAFSA was available for filing beginning of October 2015. It used the 2015 tax return…which should have been done by October…even for self employed folks.
If you are talking about the 2017-2018 fafsa…that was available October 2016…and the 2015 tax return information. Most definitely taxes for 2015 should have been completed.
Could you clarify:
- What academic year are you talking about?
- Was your FAFSA completed...and submitted?
- Did you get a financial aid package?
- How did you gain independent status?
I think October 2016 was the first time FAFSA was available to file in October.
2016/17 FAFSA would have started in January 2016, and 2015 taxes might not have been done then, but would have been due by October 2016 (with an extension).
Oh right…this was the first year it was available in October.
So if the OP is talking about the current academic year 2016-2017…,how did he gain independent status?
