I attend a community college and I don't know what to do about the Cal Grant deadline today because my parents haven't finished filing their taxes so I dont have the exact information. Should I just guess and update it later or not even worry about tomorrows deadline since community college students have till september?

For most of my schools these dates are guidelines, and many will give you financial aid just as long as you sent the FAFSA initially.

tscogrady...Deadlines are there for a reason. I'm sorry to say that I do not agree with your response. It is very important to adhere to the deadlines the school posts. Re: filing the financial aid applications...students and parents can use estimates to file these ON TIME. Then they can update the information once their taxes are complete. You noted that the FAFSA should be initially filed, and I'm hoping that you meant BEFORE the deadline passed.

For anyone who missed a deadline, file ASAP (even with estimates) and hope for the best. Some schools actually process their aid in order of the receipt of the applications and if you apply REALLY late, they actually have expended the majority of their funds. There is no reason to jeopardize financial aid because of deadlines...just do the forms on time.

What about the IDOC which specifically asks for a signed copy of my parents' tax returns? They said there's no way they're be done for some time and the deadline is the 4th, am I out of luck?

Someone here quoted the IDOC deadline and it seemed like it was not a firm date. BUT that being said...it is prudent to complete taxes as soon as reasonably possible so that your FAFSA and Profile can be updated and your financial aid package finalized.

If there is really a problem with meeting the deadline for those tax returns, I would suggest calling the financial aid office at the school and asking THEM if this is an issue. They will tell you their policy.

Yeah, I emailed the financial aid offices of the schools I am applying to, one said that there was no real deadline for getting tax returns in, just a deadline for the Profile and FAFSA, two others told me to send 2006 returns and then the 2007 returns when they come in, and one told me to send drafts of the 2007 returns.
