Do the schools need to recieve the FAFSA by Feb1 (assuming that is the due date) or does it need to be sent by then?

My understanding is that you MUST meet the deadlines. Since most of us don't have all of our 1099's and W-2's -- they only have to be POSTMARKED by 1/31 -- the deadlines are unrealistic. We used our December paystubs and 2003 taxes to estimate our 2004 numbers and will revise/correct FAFSA as soon as we get our taxes done. BTW, this same idiocy applies to CSS Profile forms for private colleges. Several colleges have mid-January deadlines and ED students must submit numbers in November!

Again, meet the deadlines and revise later!

It may depend on the college, but I looked up the forms for one of the colleges my son is applying to, and it says the FAFSA must be sent to the "processing agency" by the deadline, not received by the college. I remember at least one other college had similar wording. gives a LITTLE more leeway...

Thanks boxmaker and Susantm. We finally have all the FAFSAs out as of today so we should be OK, just waiting on W2's for the Profile

arizonmom, are you here? I need a help immediately, can you tell me what year of fafsa did you fill for your childern?
My specific problem is stated on my thread, which is right below yours.
Thanks

2005/2006 for that upcoming school year. Last year we did 2004/2005. Hope that helps!

You can also do your FAFSA using estimates using last years taxes as a guide, (check off that you will file a 2004 return) just to make the deadline then go back and make corrections, since the schools will most likely ask for copies of your 2004 taxes and W-2s to verify your income

So both FAFSA and the CSS Profile only need to be sent in by you to the College Board or whatever by Feb. 1, right? The colleges don't have to have them then and they get the forms later? Is that how it works?

ya..i think thats how it works. i just got my W2 yesterday so i will mail that in with my correct 2004 tax return thing...i dont really understand how all this works but me and my dad are just crossing our fingers and hoping everything comes out okay.

also, I submitted my FAFSA online over a week ago but my colleges show that they havent received them. how long until they get it? also after i submitted mine i noticed that one of my schools somehow got deleted off my list. i did the "make corrections" thing but the school still isnt showing up on my list. am i just freaking out for no reason?

Help! I just checked the FAFSA processing and realized that I signed it but my daughter needs to also!! I thought one signer was enough! Now there is no time for her to get a pin before Feb !! Please tell me I did not do all this work for nothing! What should I do?

Signed, stupid and helpless

exduzzit-
I did that last year for my son's FAFSA except he had a PIN and I didn't. You need to request a PIN for him ASAP. It might come before 2/1. The sooner you do it the better.

Kat

She should go on line and apply for a pin (now) which will come back very shortly. then the FAFSA can be "signed" electronically by her.

If you are looking on your college website for the information, because of the large number of applications and financial aid request, it takes a while for the school to update the information. Tufts was the most frustrating when it came to this, I was in a panic because we know that we did our part.

From what I have seen especially in schools which are need blind, the only packages that go to financial aid are those of prospective students, as financial aid does not have the time or the resources to put together a package for every person who applies. Relax, if the school is missing something, they will contact you.

Sybbie, I knew I could count on you. I have been reading the posts by those who did not receive their pin for quite a few days. I did get mine in 2 days, so will cross my fingers. It's all moot anyway--she won't be eligible, but she did apply for some merit money so I do want to follow all the rules! :)

Remind me to start this process in 10th grade next time...oh no, that's next year!

e

thanks so much for the PIN headsup...I had no idea!

sybbie: I read a post of yours from another board and you mentioned something about College Board and an IBOC form. I have not yet received this form (by mail) from CB even though I filled out my profile around December. What do I do now with only 2 days left?

sybbie719 - this is from a question I just posted (then I saw this thread).
Is it OK to send electronic signature on/after Feb. 1? We did not realize S needed to also electronically sign - we had obtained the parent PIN ages ago. Filled out FAFSA yesterday (Saturday, 1/29) and did submit it online. H did sign electronically. Applied for S a PIN. I got the impression that just so it was submitted by Feb. 1st, things were fine. Now, reading other posts, I am wondering about this. I did look on my S's favorite school website, and saw that they want to receive all the info by Feb. 15th. Am I correct in assuming that this gives a bit of leeway to those of us who didn't realize about needing TWO pins?

They must be postmarked Feb. 1, not Jan. 31
