I am a naturalized American citizen and so is my mother, but I don't have my SSN (yet), but my mother does. But I have an ITIN number.

I just started filing for FAFSA but I cannot go through the first step because I don't have an SSN. Is it possible to use an ITIN number, or should I just wait til this Friday and register for a proper SSN at the office?

By the way, is January 2nd or 3rd a little too late to file for FAFSA or is that still pretty early? Stupid question, but I am just REALLY ANXIOUS to file for FAFSA

Thank you

January 2nd/3rd is definitely early to get the FAFSA done. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, but make sure you get it in asap!

Donald…actually January 2/3 is NOT too early to get the FAFSA done…especially if a student wants to be in the queue for limited funded need based aid like Perkins Loans, federal work study, SEOG…anything that has limited funding per college campus.

To the OP…get that SS number ASAP. The SS offices should be open this week.

Why not Thursday? Your SSA local office may open on 1/2/14. It will take at least a few days to get your SSN in the mail.

You cannot file the FAFSA with an ITIN. You need the SSN. That means that you need to get yourself to the Soc Sec office as soon as possible and take care of this.

When you apply for the SSN number, ASK for the number. They won’t give you a card, but can tell you the number. If the worker won’t, ask for a supervisor. Otherwise, it can take 2 weeks to get the card.
