I submitted my FAFSA about two weeks ago. The first time, I got an EFC of 10,000 (which for a family of 5 with an income of 32,000, is too much). I got the FAFSA back, saying that I needed to make corrections because the SSN of my parents did not match the ones on some database. I made a few more financial information corrections, and used the number my parents use on their taxes. I sent the FAFSA and noticed that my EFC couldn't be calculated. I went back to my FAFSA account and it said that my application could not be processed because the SSN numbers did not match (yet again).

It also said that I need to contact the SSA and ensure that the number is correct, and that if it's incorrect... to make a correction. Well, here's the problem: I CAN'T MAKE CORRECTIONS. Every time I try, I get redirected to my account where it says that action is required on my application.

My parents don't want to contact the Social Security Administration because, according to them, there is no point. They don't have a "true" social security number.

Now I don't know what to do. I know the circumstances are rather strange, but please help!

Are your parents undocumented? Then you should be using 000000000 for their SSN, and you will need to print out the parent signature form to be signed and mailed in.

If your parents are using an ITIN instead of a SSN to file their taxes, the ITIN will not work on the FAFSA. Only a real SSN or 000000000 will work. The ITIN has a different number of digits.

Yeah it isn’t working for me either. I’m a citizen but my parents aren’t so I put the ITIN number they use to file their taxes but the SS place says their numbers aren’t working. So I put all zeros and it still doesn’t let me submit because I put that they already filed the 1040, the FAFSA doesn’t let me put that they are not citizens and still filing taxes, the website says that it doesn’t match up because it should be “Foreign Taxes” that their filing, so now I don’t know what to do. I can’t put they filed foreign taxes because thy didn’t, I guess my only choice would be to put they didn’t file taxes. I don’t know how much money I would get though.

Pick up the phone, and call the FAFSA help center. They will talk you through the steps needed. You aren’t alone in this.

Good luck!
