Hi everyone!
I’m kind of at a roadblock and hoped for some insight.
My parent is filling out a fafsa form and while they did graduate from college abroad during the 80’s, they are not applying to fafsa to continue graduate+ studies. They want to study English properly and asked me to look over the summary
Q48 fills in by itself, which is whether the applicant will be “working on Master’s or Doctorate in 2017-2018” and has yes as an answer.
Q28 asks if the applicant would have their bachelor degree by the beginning of the school year, which technically they would
Q29 asks for the student’s grade level, which originally would be like ~5 years but I was guessing I should put Attended College Before/1st year because they’re not continuing their studies. Also the measure of level by year level (freshman, sophomore) doesn’t convert directly to their study program cause…another country lol
I don’t know what to tell them because they’re not continuing 20+ year studies, it’s a certificate attempt I guess.
EDIT: I mentioned q28 cause that’s what fills out q48 automatically
Im confused. Is your parent just taking an English course or two…or are they enrolling in a degree seeking program.
They can’t get need based aid unless they will be in a degree seeking program.
And if they already have a college bachelors degree…I’m not sure they can get need based aid for an additional bachelors degree.
I’m… not entirely sure. I think the idea was to study English now to eventually get a degree but they’d need to better their english and take remedial courses.
I’ll tell them though, I think they might have to scrap the whole thing lol. Is there a way to close the thread or delete it?
EDIT: I forgot to saw but wow thanks for the response! and also that was so quick lol
I just talked to them and I think they’ll have to scarp the whole thing. We checked the school website and all and I think it’s a no-go lol. Is there a way to close or delete the thread?
By the way thank you for your reply!
@hounddog
In many communities, there is a continuing education program, often run through the public schools.these programs offer English language classes…and where I am…those are at NO charge. Check to see if your town offers continuing education classes for second language learners of English.
In the past, federal aid could be used for Workforce English, but that may have changed. In any case, your father needs Academic English if he wants to go to college or grad school here. Some language institutes do have a certain amount of scholarship money for exceptional students, but normally students need to cover the full costs of those classes.
Where do you live? In my area community colleges generally offer free Workforce English classes in the Continuing Education division, low-cost pre-academic/professional English classes in Continuing Education, and semi-intensive and intensive Academic English classes in the credit division. Here is a link for you to look at to get an idea: http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/wdce/englishlanguageskills.html You will see that each program has it’s own admission requirements, and that tuition varies from free to the same as college tuition.
Wishing your dad all the best as he works on improving his language skills!
