Fafsa Help

Can i start the fafsa application without my mom receiving he 1040a yet? like estimates from last year? and just go back and correct it?

The 2010-2011 FAFSA will be available for online submission on January 1, 2010. You should do it in keeping with the deadline for the schools to which you are applying. If the school has a January deadline…here’s what your parents and you do.

File your FAFSA using a “will file” status which means you WILL file your taxes but have not yet done so. Use the BEST possible estimates based on your end of year pay stubs, interest statements etc. Then submit it to the school(s).

Do your taxes as soon as reasonably possible after Feb 1 when you have all of your 2009 documentation. Go back IN to the FAFSA website and amend your FAFSA to reflect the figures from your 2009 completed tax return and resubmit to the college(s). Change your status to “taxes completed”.

This is the year you want to get your taxes done as soon as possible. It is NOT the year to wait until April 15th to complete your taxes.

Yes. You can file on estimates and go back and correct any items after the taxes are finished.

DON’T MISS THE PRIORITY DEADLINES!!!

when it asked for income tax paid? does it mean how much we will receive cuz my mom nver pays

Your mom might not be paying ADDITIONAL income tax when she files, but if she is employed, her employer is taking income tax OUT of her pay. Unless she is earning a VERY small amount, the government will keep at least a good portion of what is withheld from her pay. The total amount of taxes paid (whether through payroll withdrawal or by also paying an additional amount when filing) is reported.

so if im using my moms tax return from last year what would that be under

Line 37 on the 2008 1040A

its blank line 37 says add lines 35 and 36 this is your total tax right?

Yes. That’s correct.

so then i guess i put 0? on line 38 it says federal income tax witheld from forms w2 and 1099 and the amount 685 that has nothing to do with it

What does THIS mean?

Are you saying lines 35 and 36 both say $0?

yes they are both blank and line 38 has an amount of 685

scottaa, do priority deadlines pertain to initial filing of the fafsa and profile using estimates, or for corrections after filing taxes?

What I have seen is most schools will process an award if you file on estimates before the deadline, but it is contingent upon the information once your taxes are filed.

scottaa, thanks.

It varies by school. We used to do the FAFSA early (before tax filing) for my daughter’s school. Then I realized on her FA page that they marked the day they completed verification as the day all documents were received and verified. They did not award a dime until then. So now we make sure to get the taxes filed as early as possible (usually 1st week of feb as that is when we have all the required documents - the 1098 from the school is always the last!!). Her aid has been the same more or less whether we filed early or waited till Feb when our taxes were done.

I called 2 different FA offices today. We used estimates, but our taxes cannot be filed until about the 3rd week of February according to our accountant. Both schools told us that we will get packages based upon the estimates. One school said that if we were selected for verification based upon our estimates, then they would NOT be able to get a package to us based upon those estimates. They would need other documentation first (copies of returns, and I don’t know what else). Fortunately we were not selected for verification when we completed our first version of the FAFSA.

Your mileage may vary…
