Hello. I recently submitted the corrections for my 2012-2013 FAFSA. However, when I did this I was not able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to link FAFSA to my parents' tax information. If I don't do this by March 2nd, will my application get jeopardized? Should I fax in my parents' 2011 tax information at this point?

Call the school.

How long ago were the taxes filed? It took 5 business days for me to he able to use the IRS link to correct the FAFSA.
Your school will ask you to submit any documents it needs, but calling them will help put your mind at ease.

You should contact the school. They will tell you what any deadlines are and what they will need. Good luck with using that Data Retrieval tool; I’ve been trying for over 3 weeks!

I was told if you or one of your parents are filing as Head of Household or Married filing Separately, you can’t you use the retrieval tool this year.

Not so. Head of Household works fine.

It is true that the link won’t work for HoH or MFS … IF there are two parents listed on the FAFSA. This is because a) you can only link to one tax transcript and you need two in both of these situations, and b) you can’t file HofH if you are married (but people DO, and finaid officers get to be the bad guy & say refile or no aid).

Note: Yes, you can file HofH if you are separated … but you would not put 2 parents on the FAFSA in that case. And yes, there are SOME cases where you can be married & file HofH (like spouse living in another country), but those are rare & documentation can be provided to prove that you are eligible to file this way.

I would definitely call the school. My son’s private will not process his application until they have the IRS retrieval. My daughter’s public doesn’t require it at all.

Correct for me - HOH but only one parent on FAFSA. Which, as you point out, is basically the only way one CAN file HOH since that is a “single” filing status.

hey guys! i hope everything worked out! i have a question: i’ve applied to nyu heop program and the program asks for verification of non-filing, because my father doesn’t file taxes (he’s disabled and receives social security benefits). I know that i have to fill out form 4506-T and fax that to the IRS, who will then mail it to NYU. how long do you think this process will take? because I need everything in by FRIDAY the 30th, or else my chance to attend my dream school will be gone. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!!
