FAFSA IRS link won't work 3 weeks after filing taxes

I filed the FAFSA (and profile) 1/20/12 based on estimated taxes. I filed by federal taxes electronically a week later (1/26/12) and received verification via turbotax on 1/28/12 that the feds had accepted my taxes.

I waited 2 weeks to correct the FAFSA figuring it would take that long for the IRS to process my tax information. However, as of today, roughly 3 weeks later, all is not well.

I can open the FAFSA and link to the IRS site, but when I ask the IRS to send the information to FAFSA I get an error message.

Is anyone else experiencing these problems? Is it just taking longer than advertised for the IRS to process my tax information? We will be contacting IRS tomorrow to verify that they have our tax return.

Are you filing as head-of-household or married filing seperately ? FAFSA link does not work in those situations.

Doonerak- I called the IRS today to see why I am four weeks out from efiling and still can’t link. They said they can see my return and no problems have been identified, it’s just taking longer than anticipated to process due to heavy workload on their part. Same story for my daughters return. They said it may be another week before I’m able to link.

doonerak…Yes…someone else was experiencing the same problem. They went to the local IRS office and obtained the tax return transcript to submit to the school same day. I think they tried for three days with no success. Look in the thread IRS data retrieval tool. Do a search. It was just posted a day or two ago. So Sorry.

Thanks to everyone, I’ll search for the additional information and hold off the panic button. we filed as married/joint, so at least thats not the problem!

I have had several conversations with the IRS about my return not being processed yet. I e-filed on 1/18 and my 1040 was accepted by the IRS but has not been processed. Until it is processed the data link cannot be used - the message I get when I try the retrieval tool is “return not found”. I have been told by several IRS agents that because I am not receiving a refund, my return has been “re-sequenced”. This means the bottom of the pile for my return - may even be April before it is processed. So much for filing early! The IRS was much quicker cashing my check than they are with processing my return. Ugghhh!

I had tons of problems. I tried several different browsers on several different computers using several different Operating Systems. I’m the one they’re talking about up above. I finally did get fed up and went to my IRS office. They gave me a transcript and I was in and out of there in no time at all. I faxed it away to all the schools that needed it and called it good. That was 2 days ago. One of the school’s has already gone in and finalized our FAFSA as of yesterday and we received an email from them today. Don’t keep fighting the IRS tool unless you just want to. Everyone was happy to take our transcript instead. Good luck!

Cally: Did you just walk into an IRS center to request the transcript? Was there a fee?

I e filed on 2-4 and the IRS Retrieval Tool finally showed up tonight; I filed Head of Household and a 1040A. It seemed to go through successfully.

The link showed up when I changed “will file” to “already filed”!

hutch14, Regarding your taxes being resequenced…Simply not true. We filed regular snail mail and had to pay. I was told the same thing. “Since we had to pay, all the other returns would be processed first and then our return since there is no urgency for the refund.” I was also told that our return might get processed in May. Our return was processed in 21 days. They are processed in the order they are received. Not to worry. You must have spoken to the same dingaling that I talked to.

CalmlyiChaotic: What information/identification did you have to provide to the IRS office to get the transcript? What was the time span between filing your returns and obtaining the transcript?

mum4college, Thank you for the information. I have spoken to several dingalings at the IRS and while they have all been really pleasant, all have given different answers and conflicting advice. I also notified one of D’s schools about the delay in the transcript they requested and got a reassuring email back - “don’t worry, we’ll all get through this” said the FAO. So, I’m just going to relax and not worry about what is out of my control. I do feel like this whole FA aid process has been really stressful - being selected for verification by FAFSA, eight colleges needing additional FA applications, supporting docs, different deadlines etc. I’ll be glad when it’s all over!

Gemini, I just had to give my husbands SS# since he was first on the return and my ID. As for the time frame, it was maybe 2 weeks, if not a little less.

^^^

Thanks, I suspect I will be going this route as well!

@Calmly - how were you able to give your husband’s SS# ? That part is auto-filled and not editable.

My H went to the IRS office yesterday to get a transcript and since our taxes have not been processed, he was unable to get a transcript and we are unable to use the retrieval tool.

One of S’s schools will not accept the transcript, they insist that the FAFSA must be auto-flled with the data retrieval tool.

And I agree, this has been stressful… hurry up to meet the deadlines and have to wait for the government until after the deadlines.

We too will not receive a refund, I don’t know if this will matter but it looks like maybe it will, maybe it won’t.

Why not just do it by hand? There aren’t that many figures, at least there weren’t for mine.

The schools won’t allow by hand… it must come from IRS.

What error message are you getting? I’m in the same boat, and am getting: “The information you entered does not match our records, therefore, we are unable to provide you with your Federal Income Tax Information.”

Same error, filed tax return on 2/4 it was accepted by IRS 2/6. It wasn’t coming up in Where’s My Refund either, it finally showed up there just 3 days ago.

I changed the numbers already and just keep trying with the FAFSA tool.

By the way, why wouldn’t Head of Household work? It’s there as an option, the link appears, and it’s on the IRS drop-down. It just can’t find the return, it says.

Crazymonster, all I can say for that is that I sat down with the IRS agent in her cubicle. She asked for a SS#, I asked which one, mine or my husband’s since he’s first on the return. She said his, I gave it and she gave me my transcript. I had even filled out the Transcript request form. She didn’t want it or even look at it, just offered to shred it for me when I started to leave.

^ ah the transcript. Well H is the one who went in to get the transcript and he’s first on the taxes, so that wasn’t the issue for us :-). I think we must practice patience… ARGH.
