Do you need one for yourself and one for your parents? Or one for both you and your parents? Thanks for your help.

You need one for yourself and one for your parents - two total.

But how do I get one for my parents? Do I do the same thing but with their information?

yep. you do the same thing for ur parents to apply for a pin number

What if my dad already did FAFSA for my sister? Does he use the PIN from a few years back?

For him he can use his pin (not your sisters) from when he did the Fafsa for you sister. You have to get your own pin.

K thanks. 10 chars

Can anyone explain the reason behind having the two pins? I know the financial aid workshop we went to said the same thing, but we had SO much trouble retrieving the first PIN number that we are afraid to get one in our names. Should we wait until we file it using D's PIN? We probably will be doing that this weekend, as the CSS profile went out yesterday. When you get the parent PIN, do you have to fill out the form again with all of the same information? Sorry for all the questions, but this is driving us crazy.....

The PIN is necessary because it acts as your electronic signature. Since both you and you d must "sign" the form with your own signature and your own social security number, you need your own PINs. You do submit the same form; you don't have to fill it out again. But you can't file it without your PIN, using only your D's PIN, so you can't wait. You both sign the same form.

My mom hasn't gotten her pin yet, but I've gotten mine. I listed her as the same email, so could that be the problem, though my cousin did the same thing 2 years ago and got hers.

No that should not be a problem. Our daughter listed the same email adress as her Dad and we got both without any problem. And our son will also list the same one as he is currently without internet access. How long ago did your Mom apply for it? It should only take a couple of days.

I realized my mistake. Two emails came but I thought it was just a accidental repeat (yeah, not so smart). When I went through me emails, I saw one had my name and the other had my mom's. So now everything's straight. Should I get it in about 3 days from now or before?

Were the emails saying the PINS were available? If so you can get them now.

Oh yeah, they were. I just didn't bother to look at thet names on them. Whoops! But it's all straight now. I checked my status and it's processing and it says that all the signatures requires were met. Thanks for the help!

You need to have a PIN for the student and one parent...and that is that. If you don't have the two PINs you cannot submit your FAFSA...and that is that.

What if my parents did it by paper last time. Do they already have a PIN number or do they need to get one?

The purpose of the PIN is so you/your parents can "sign" electronically, since online you/they are unable to do that. If your parents filled out a paper app last time, they did not obtain a PIN because they were able to sign on the paper application.
