My fafsa was selected for verification, perhaps because I made a major correction that changed my EFC score of 20k to 2k. I wasn’t able to use the IRS data retrieval because it said my data didn’t match despite entering exactly what is on the tax return. I was wondering what happens in the verification process? Do I call the schools I apply to and ask what documents they need? I’m not entirely sure.
Yes, each school will want documents like W2’s, a tax transcript (which you should probably order now because it’s likely you’ll need it), maybe some bank statements. If you added a zero to your income, it might be easy to see the cause of the change and the schools may only want that transcript.
Make sure you check your school portals for any verification requests. Every year, students wrote that they didn’t look there. Also, check your spam folder.
Send the verification requested info ASAP.
