Quick question. Taxes have been completed in draft form so numbers are accurate. Does it matter whether the "will file" or "filed" selection is chosen (i.e. will the FAFSA folks check with the IRS to determine exactly when the tax returns were submitted)?

It is my understanding that if you check "will file," you then need to go back and correct the FAFSA. This will not be necessary since the numbers will remain the same so I'm trying to avoid an unnecessary step yet do not want the FAFSA to be tossed out because I said that the tax forms were submitted when they were not (but they were completed). Any guidance appreciated.

I’m not sure. I used “will file” but used good numbers from turbo tax. I didn’t have all my 1099’s yet so I can’t file yet. I figured I would just go back in to change the one or two numbers that might be different.

If you haven’t filed…use “will file”. Or just file the taxes and THEN submit the FAFSA as filed. If you have all the info…why not just file and get it over with.

I’d love to “get it over with”, however am awaiting paperwork that my accountant needs in order to finalize the returns. The numbers are accurate, however. Filed the FAFSA and indicated “will file” yet if no numbers need to be changed, do I need to revisit the FAFSA simply to change the tax filing status to “filed”?

Yes but it won’t take you very long to do!!!
