I'm not sure how to ask t his without making it sound complicated so I'm just going to get started and see how it comes out lol. I filled out my FAFSA a couple days ago because I am finally going back to finish my last year of college. The form asked for my tax information from the last year (2008). According to that filed tax info, I was married and living off my husbands salary. We are well into the 2009 year and not only are we seperated but in a matter of weeks I won't be supported by his salary anymore (hence my finishing school asap). So, I'm just wondering if the FAFSA is supposed to truly reflect the last years tax info...or your current income status. In my situation this is a major difference income wise. If anyone can help me with this, I would be most grateful! :) THanks!

First off… you will file as separated.

As for the tax info, I recommend you check with the school’s FA office on this one before doing so, but here is a similar situation.

I had a client a few years back in a similar situation. Husband and wife separated, but did not file for divorce for years. They continued to file a joint tax return. We split out their tax information and filed the FAFSA based upon her individual information contained therein.

That’s an option, but some schools may not find it kosher. The other option is to file including your husband’s 2008 info and file an appeal with the school. In some instances, they will go back and make the changes on the form for you.

There is a section in the FAFSA instructions that details this. You file FAFSA as separated, with only your portion of the 2008 income, taxes paid, etc. and your portion of the current asset info.
