Am I in trouble? I was selected for verification and corrected my FAFSA three times, because I filled out several fields incorrectly - will this seem suspicious?

My changes were:
1) Register for Selective service
2) Update $$ in savings account (I don't know why, but I accidentally put 0 initially)
3) Change education tax credits from 0 to $1500, because I was looking at the wrong schedule

I was wondering what information schools need to verify the FAFSA. I have contacted a couple and both said 2011/2010 Tax returns + W2s, so I'm assuming this is what every school will need? Don't many schools ask for those forms to be mailed anyway?

Schools will tell you exactly what they need and when they need it. Wait until a school decides it even wants to verify your forms and contacts you. Theoretically colleges are required to verify about 1/3 of all FAFSAs submitted so perhaps you’ll be in the 2/3rds that arent verified? If you are talking about the Profile colleges that is different, many of them ask for copies of the tax forms with the financial aid application. Read the directions on each colleges website and follow the directions.

Just so you know, you are not the only one who has to update things on the FAFSA. It is common. Schools don’t care how many times you change things, although you should never make changes to a FAFSA that has already been verified (I watched for those & adjusted aid back to what it should be when students decided to change back what I changed during verification!).

Thank you for the reassurance. So basically, I should just sit tight and wait for the schools to contact me? I won’t be able to provide 2011 tax forms/W2s until mid-February when my parents file their returns, anyway.

We haven’t had a year when we didn’t mail in tax forms. Probably cause I did the FAFSA once, then again when I had the right numbers- then again when I saw I had mistyped or when the school corrected it for me.

All D gets from her public U, is un/sub loans, but I think they request the info from everyone. Her sisters school gave a large grant, & my reasoning was- even with the grant they probably couldn’t figure out how we afforded the school.

Sometimes they just post it on the student’s account on their site. So, you will have to check the account often to make sure you get all the necessary documentation to the school on time.
