We selected "will file" when doing the FAFSA since taxes were not done yet. We were selected for verification and just finished taxes. Do we need to "make corrections" to the FAFSA and change the estimates to actual tax numbers and resubmit, or will the process of verification and sending copies of tax forms to the schools suffice?

Also, if D is no longer interested in a school that we sent the first FAFSA to, does she still need to send the verification form to that school?

Thank you!

You should make the corrections and submit them online. Wait until the schools contact you about the verification. Just because the FAFSA processor chose you for verification does not mean every school will need to complete that verification process. (For example, my D was selected for verification last year, but her college met their quota for verification and did not actually need anything further from us.)

If you submit a corrected FAFSA and file it as “already completed” then if you do need to send the verification documents to the school(s), it will be a quick and easy process to see that all your numbers agree with your tax returns.

One of the schools that contacted her about verification is one she is no longer interested in. Should she still complete it the verification anyway?

There isn’t any reason to if she’s definitely not going to attend.

Thank you. I thought that verification might be to prove that we aren’t trying to commit fraud, but at the same time, didn’t want to bother with the form since she is not interested. one less thing to worry about!

If a school requires you to be verified, then you’ll have to do it before your financial aid can be finalized. But, of course, you don’t need financial aid for a college your daughter won’t be attending.

Make sure to get any documentation to colleges that request it, though, as long as they are ones that she’s still considering!
