hello i was wondering since my sister filled out the fafsa and didn't receive any money do i have to do it. My dad said i don't have to do it since he would pay for my education but do some colleges require it to get in and what would happen if i don't fill it out

No one HAS to fill out FAFSA. It is an application for financial aid, which includes schools loans. I don’t know any colleges that require it.

You do not get any money from FAFSA. It just clears you for financial aid for that school year. You and your parent get a FAFSA PIN which is necessary for most any federal aid including loans. It also give you a number called the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) that tells you how much your family is expected to be able to pay before getting any federal subsidies. If your family has a high EFC, over what the schools cost, all you can get are loans. Your parent would be eligible for PLUS Direct loans and you would be eligible for up to $5500 in Student Direct loans as a freshman. If you have any need, which is defined as the official Cost of Attendance (COA) minus the EFC, you might be eligible for aid from the school and/or work study.

But if your parents have your education costs covered, there is no need to fill out FAFSA.

Colleges do NOT require the FAFSA for admissions consideration. The FAFSA is for need based aid consideration. Some schools do require that it be completed for merit awards as well…this would easily be found on the school website or by making a phone caller sending an email.

If you don’t need or want any financial aid, you are never required to complete the FAFSA.

thank you so much

We don’t have to fill it out, but I would fill it out anyway since it is free and fairly quick to do.

Some schools use it as their own financial aid application. You may still qualify for some need based aid through the school or even work study.
