fafsa

okay so I almost fnished the whole thing, and now I need the verifacation questions out of the way. They asked about my father's SSN, last name and initial. Every answer I tped in they said was incorrect according to the SSA. I know for a fact that I'm typing in the correct information, so I don't know what to do.

Are you 100% sure that everything is being entered correctly? Check the numbers and the spelling again. Make sure the name is exactly the same as the name on your dad's social security card. It is possible that the social security administration has incorrect info on your dad, but that probably would have showed up in one way or another by now. He can call 1-800-772-1213 to verify what is in the SS database for him if the info you are entering is definitely correct.

I am positively sure that everything to correct, i've checked social security, I don't know what else to do now

What is your error message? Can you post it here?

Are you typing in the info to sign using the PIN? If so, make sure you are typing the SSN in the correct format. I am not sure what screen you are on ... but if you are on the one where you type in the SSN and it shows up as dots, you may be typing it in the wrong format. I helped a man last week who keep getting a wrong birthdate message. When I watched him type it in, I noticed that he was entering it in using the wrong format.

If you are convinced you are doing everything correctly, you'll have to have your dad contact the social security administration office to correct the info in their system.

I don't have the exact massage because I close the window, but it says that the name I provided for my father did not match the name that the SSA has on the social security number.
There was no dots, the numbers were visible. I'll call the offices on Monday because I tried to call earlier and all I got was the machine.

Your dad will have to call. They won't discuss his info with you. The FAFSA goes through a central processor that checks SSN info directly with the SSA database. If the match doesn't go through, it means that the info in the SSA database is incorrect. He will definitely need to change this.

Do you have a 2/1 deadline for the FAFSA? If so, will it let you submit the FAFSA even though the SSN is incorrect? If not, try using all 0's for his SSN. That may allow it to go through. Either way, the FAFSA will reject and you will have to correct it when the SSA database gets corrected. Even if it rejects, you'll still show that you filed on time. If you can wait until the SSN gets updated, though, you should do that.

what happens if I don't submit the fafsa?

Do you have a priority filing date set by the school? If you do, it's important to meet that deadline in order to get the best possible aid package (if you think you'll qualify for need based aid). If you aren't in a hurry to meet a deadline, though, just wait until everything gets straightened out.

Mine says something similar under the "SAR Comments." It says:
"The Social Security Administration did not confirm that you are a U.S.
citizen. You must provide your school with documentation of your citizenship
status before you can receive federal student aid."

-- When it says "provide your school with documentation," is it talking about my high school, or the schools that I applied to? Or should I call SSA first? Will colleges not receive my FAFSA until I get this taken care of?

bump (10 char)

Stone,

The colleges you listed on the FAFSA will still receive your FAFSA but they will see that your citizenship status wasn't confirmed. You will have to provide documentation that establishes your citizenship to the colleges. Such documentation can include copy of your birth certificate, passport, resident alien card, social security card, naturalization certificate, etc.

Sometimes, these types of flags occur because the FAFSA Processing Center didn't receive a response from the SSA in a timely manner. It can also occur if you had any errors in your citizenship answers, such as a typo or transposed number. It is easily fixed with the proper documentation.

Will the colleges ask me to provide documentation themselves or should I mail documentation to their student aid offices?

You could call & ask. We require original documents to be presented to us in person. We take a copy, note that the picture matches the person, and then put it into the student's file for future reference. Even though we have documentation on file, students' FAFSA's may continue to get those messages/flags ... we just are able to resolve the flag without requesting documents again (in most, but NOT all, situations) in future years.

So, do I have to provide documenation to every college I applied to or just the one I'll be attending (which I haven't decided yet)?

That's why I suggest calling. Different schools have different policies. Some may ask you to wait until you have made a decision, while others may ask for something now.

I think I know what happened to mine, I think it's because I didn't enter my father's first initial when I first filled it out(dunno how I skipped that part!), so the name wasn't recognized.
So what do I do now??
