Fafsa

All right, well I had to send in verification information for one of my schools (UNL) and they finally looked over all of the info and have sent me an email saying they are changing some info on my FAFSA. My question is if this will raise or lower my EFC. They updated the amount reported for my parents' payments to tax-deferred pension and savings plan per my dad's W-2. They sent the corrections and I will get a new SAR.

So I guess I have 2 questions. From your guys' experience, will this raise or lower my EFC? Second, will this new SAR (and possible EFC) be sent to all of my schools as well, or just to UNL? Thanks so much for the help. ^_^

I get the feeling that they added back in the amount that your dad has going to his 401k. If that’s the case, that will raise your EFC. I don’t know how much, since I don’t know how much we’re talking about.

It depends on exactly what the correction is.

Did you not report the contributions to tax deferred pensions on FAFSA? If not then that will increase the EFC. Contributions to tax deferred pensions are not allowed to reduce income so are added back to the AGI. In most cases this will cause the EFC to increase (if AGI is low enough,<$30k, for auto 0 it may not).

If it is something else it may or may not increase it.

It will be sent to all schools.

I was afraid of that. (sigh) Do you know if that would get sent to all of my colleges then? I’m kinda hoping not, but I’m afraid it will. Thanks. ^_^

Swimcat says that all schools will find out about the change.

If they officially changed FAFSA then it will be sent to all your colleges. If you did not report it correctly then your FAFSA EFC is wrong so it should be changed. Any other school verifying your data would be required to change it.

yeah, i started my post before that was on there so i didn’t read it. xD

I don’t remember, it has been like over a month now since we filled it out. I thought we filled it out right, obviously not. My mom and I obviously did not understand the thing correctly. I think we might have thought it said not including W-2, or we just looked at the box it referenced in the income tax return and not the W-2. Or I am rambling with no idea. Just really sucks, because we can’t even afford our EFC now, let alone a higher amount. (I know, I already said this, but I am depressed now, so I felt like restating this fact.)

Oh, thanks for the info. It wasn’t what I wanted to hear, but nice to know.

Fairy…whatever happened with your appeal to the private college for more aid/scholarships? Weren’t they supposed to review at their next meeting? Did they go on Spring Break and never get back to you?

I don’t know. I emailed my financial aid adviser today asking if he knew anything about it and the status of it. He emailed me back saying he would talk with the Financial Aid Committee tomorrow and get back to me. I wish my mom or I were actually around to talk to them, like a phone call, but they are an hour ahead of us so it is really hard to get a hold of them that way.

My mom also emailed them, asking questions herself about my financial aid, because she didn’t understand it and he explained like 3-4 different loan options, the payment plan, and applying for scholarships. He also explained to her what had to be repaid back and what didn’t.

So long story short, hopefully I will hear something tomorrow. I am hoping they see that I am really interested and will at least meet whatever my new crazy EFC is. (My mom really doesn’t understand our EFC cause she swears it was lower with my older sis, and my sis used her dad’s income which is much higher than mine.)

cause she swears it was lower with my older sis, and my sis used her dad’s income which is much higher than mine.

Our EFC was lower with my oldest daughter as well.
at the time we had 4 people in our household & one of them was a child ,now just three people and all adults!

well maybe itwas. at least there is hope she’s not crazy XD

I don’t know if anyone can tell me, but I am home now (I was at State Speech last night, so I didn’t have access to the info). But my dad paid in about 1900, can anyone tell me about how much that will raise it? Thanks in advance if anyone can help, I really appreciate it.

(btw, I did not receive an email from my financial aid adviser today about my appeal, so I am hoping Monday. I know they are busy but I hate it when they don’t get back to you.)

It’s difficult to say. It depends on your total income level and other data that will affect income protection and allowances etc. At the high end income can affect the EFC by up to 47% of the income amount. Or it can be much lower.

If they have changed your FAFSA you should be able to go to the FAFSA website and see your new SAR.

It hasn’t been sent yet. So I don’t know. I did just check the FAFSA website but it hasn’t been changed yet. Thanks for the help. My mom and I are just trying to plan how I can afford to go to college, so this is extremely useful. Thanks.
