I failed gym with a 55 on my midyear report because a parent had health issues that required me to stay at the hospital for extended periods of time. I never went to gym because I had to balance 4 AP classes, would this 55 ruin my chances at top schools? I’ve applied to very competitive schools (Ivies, LACs, and a mix of state schools.) The rest of my midyear report is stellar with As in my AP classes and one B in non-honors physics.
I would talk to your counselor about this. That seems unreasonable that you failed gym because of a lack of attendance which is clearly explained by your extenuating circumstances.
Did you only skip gym or did you skip other classes while you were at the hospital?
Isn’t the more immediate problem fulfilling your high school graduation requirement?
Only skipped gym, not the other classes. I will makeup the credit through PM school this last semester but the 55 is still there on my midyear.
It seems that an incomplete in gym might be more appropriate. I’d talk to your guidance counselor. Perhaps he/she can add a note of explanation with the mid-year transcript. Otherwise, it may be worthwhile to email any schools that will get the midyear report with a very brief explanation and an assurance that the missed classes/failing grade will be rectified by year-end.
It would be more credible if you missed other classes. Only missing gym means you made a choice to do so.
I disagree. The OP admits to having made the conscious decision to repeatedly cut class; the “extenuating circumstances” are a smokescreen. The failing grade is completely justified.
I don’t see the issue with missing gym but I do see an issue with missing gym without getting excused absences. Did you simply stop showing up to gym or did you make any attempt to have documented reasons for missing it?
Talk to your GC.
I tried to explain my situation to my gym teacher and counselor but they said nothing could be done as I missed too many days (about 28 total). I did intentionally cut but I didn’t think my gym teacher wouldn’t allow me to makeup credit when other people passed with lower attendance rates than me.
sorry but i feel like if you’ve intentionally skipped gym then y’know… suck it up
you failed a class on your midyear report, that will negatively impact your chances against peers who have attended their classes.
Sorry about your circumstances, but 28 classes is an awful lot to miss without making some kind of arrangement/accommodation with the teacher/school in advance.
It will look odd on your transcript and might make a small difference to your chances, but can’t imagine how you could argue that this could be changed.
