I failed all my classes my first semester, and I only took 3 classes (instead of 4). I know it was because I was extremely lazy and made some extremely poor choices. Now I know better than to miss classes and I just want to do better next semester and give it my all but I just don’t know what to do. Can I even think about applying to med school? Can my GPA even come back from this? I really need some help!
Depends what grade you’re in. How are your other grades? If you’re a Junior, there might be no coming back from this, considering Junior year is the most important year of high school. If you’re a freshman, some colleges don’t even look at freshman grades. If you’re a sophomore, there is definitely a chance to bounce back, although I wouldn’t apply early decision/action anywhere because your GPA will need your first semester of senior year to recover. By failing, do you mean you got “B’s”? Or you actually failed, (C or below). If you got B’s I wouldn’t be worried, but if you quite literally failed, then I would be worried. You or your counselor can also explain to the admissions officer about how you made some poor choices. Colleges also like to see an upward trend, but keep in mind that there are people that have been solid “A” students from the first day of their freshman year. Your SAT scores and your Extracurriculars can help soften the blow as well. Overall, it really depends what grade you’re in. I definitely wouldn’t give up getting into Med School though. There are plenty of options for people who don’t do well in high school. I would try going to a less prestigious college, then transferring to a school that you want to go to. Remember, there are colleges that will accept anyone, you just have to look for them. If you do well your freshmen year of college, you can most definitely transfer to a better school. Just study hard there, do well on your MCAT, and I’m sure you can definitely get into a medical school. Keep in mind, most patients and employers don’t really judge on where you went to Med School. Definitely don’t give up this semester, or else it could be too late. Keep trying! Good luck!
Are you in college or high school? And what year are you in of whichever? Because if it’s first semester of freshman year, you can probably come back from this.
