Today, I received a commendation letter from the Director of Nominations, hence, I did not receive the nomination from my Congressman. Are there any options left open for me?

Was that the only source you applied to? If so, then yes, you can try again next year. If you really want to go to West Point, then show some determination and apply again. You could go to college for a year, enlist in the Army and try again, there are several options if you are determined. Are you?

Yes, I was also looking into ROTC, and will apply to WP next year while attending a civilian college. Only, I’m not sure how much my chances will improve next year–what should I do to make myself more competitive?

You might first see if you can find out from your MALO what, if any shortcomings your file might have that caused your not obtaining a nomination. Or even ask the MOC committee rep if that is a possibility. It could simply be you’re in a very competitive location. If so, you also might consider the enlistment route as another option.

But, the most important thing you can do is to earn stellar grades in college while reapplying. It will be the death knell if you don’t. If you can maintain strong performance while also working on some type of leadership position, even holding down a job while in school, will tell them you are serious about gaining an appointment. Admissions looks favorably on those who try and try again, all the while improving, growing and showing the marks of a good leader who can stick to a tough regimen.
