Right now, I am failing this one course. It is the wrong class and the wrong professor and myself altogether. I should have dropped it but I didn't because this is my first time in college and I felt like I am giving up too easily if I drop a course. However, I don't see how I am possibly going to improve in that class. I went to the professor's office hour once and told him that I am really having hard time understanding the lecture and asked him some questions about the materials covered in class and all he did to help me was to ask me if I ever come to class which I do. Getting help from a classmate wouldn't help because I am understanding nothing from beginning to the end and a classmate can't solve that problem. I've only taken one midterm in this class so far but I know I am going to fail. I am really depressed because of this course and I am locking myself in the room and I feel like socializing is just a waste when I can't even take care of my grades properly let alone getting an A, I just want to Pass.
I am doing ok in the other classes but this one course is just bringing me down so much.
I don't know where to go for help. I even went to see the counselor because I was so stressed but they can't help me understand the class materials.
What should I do? I know I will fail and I know that the only way to pass (since I don't understand the professor's lecture) is to read the whole text book or memorize it and I know it's impossible. I have other classes too. What should I do.

Relax, take a breath okay? Let’s start from the beginning, what class is this? You’re a Freshman so this being your first semester I can’t imagine the classes are all like some Particle Physics class. I don’t say that to depress you but to encourage you, these are intro classes so you can absolutely recieve help. You say you can’t goto a classmate for help because you don’t understand anything, I think you understand more than you’re giving yourself credit for and sometimes classmates can help you more than the professor by explaining it in a way that makes sense. Lets hear that and then find out what you can do.

Which class?

dont worry. im failing two or three of my classes. and im only taking four. first semester of college sucks

I got a 3.5 my first semester. Stop slacking off and get with the programme.

Drop it…

wow vanagandr. what a sensitive thing to say.

Can you withdraw from the class? A “W” on your transcript will look better than an “F”. Just make sure you do well from here on out.

Also, if it is required for your major, is there a way you can retake the class if you fail it and then have the new grade replace the “F”?

No, I can’t withdraw from the class anymore since drop and add period has already passed.
I don’t want to write too much details here but it is not an intro class but a level higher science class and I took the class with no other background about the class when I was supposed to take the 101 class because 101 class was already filled.

At my school, a lot of the higher level science courses have a very strict course progression guidelines. For example, certain classes require that you have taken the 101 class already, some math, etc, unless you receive permission from the instructor of the course.

Well, you are stuck. Study hard for the final, and if that doesn’t work, then try better next semester.

If you can’t take a W, then you’ll take the hit and move on. It’s ok. People fail classes for all kinds of reasons, illness for one. If you don’t need to retake it, don’t. If you need to retake it, see if you can take it someplace easier (community college) and transfer it in. I had to take a class twice and barely got a D the second time. I felt more proud of that D than anything, because I forced myself to stick with something I hated. Don’t be one of those who run away from challenges. Keep your eyes on the long-term. Good luck.

Check into this again carefully. Usually the drop/add period applies to dropping a class which is different from WITHDRAWING. When you drop a class, it never shows up on your transcript at all. When you withdraw, a W shows up, but that is still better than an F or arguably a D.
Usually you are able to withdraw from a class long after the drop/add period has ended. Got to your registrar and find out what the rules are at your school and WITHDRAW if you still can.

wmstudent01 - I took a junior level class without the prerequisite during the summer. Yes, it was difficult and laborious, but I got through it with a B.

If all your class took was a 1XX level class, then just get the book for said course, read the book, get up to speed, and take care of business.

your attitude is horrible. Quit assuming you’re going to fail and sarcrifice a bit more time for it. If you still have 2 exams left then you have a lot of time to pull your grade up to B or C at least even if you’re currently Failing.

His attitude isn’t horrible, just realistic.

There’s a philosophy out there that you should never give up on anything, but the truth is, quitting is sometimes the right thing to do. In this case, you were put in the wrong class and are in over your head, it sounds like, putting your whole program at risk. Take a W (the prof probably has the power to give you one even if the registrar says no) and do a good job with your other classes.

Retake the class with a better professor that could make all the difference. If you retake the class and get a passing grade it will replace the failing grade you may receive in the class now.
i’ve been in your exact position, but then was told by my advisors I needed to get rid of that F on my transcript and retake the course. I asked around about decent professors for the course and eventually found a really helpful professor who listens to his students and ended up passing w/ a B and it replaced that horrible F. It seriously helped my GPA for sure.
Good luck and don’t give up.

Sometimes, a question like this brings out tough responses. Not always helpful. Freshman year, lots of kids get stuck making the wrong class choices. Period. No matter whether one poster did well or not.
You try to do your best without jeopardizing the other classes. (Sometimes, this means setting fixed study times for this class, rather than letting worries affect other work.)

You see if the school has a policy for retaking a class- at some schools, if the grade is low enough, they let you retake, later, and the better grade replaces the foul one on the transcript.
And, you find your college’s academic help center.

I don’t think it actually replaces the F does it? Aren’t both listed on your transcript but only the second grade is factored into your GPA?

My concern with retaking the class is that it would cost extra money. Retaking the class is inefficient; better to get through this one.
