Failing

I am a freshmen at the college and I am getting D's, F's, and C's in all my classes. I am not a party person and I did study hard for all my tests. I live at Swem. Now I see no point in studying anymore since I still fail anyway and I am depressed. Will I get kicked out? Is it my fault? But I tried. Where can I go for help? It's just too late and I've been so unhappy the entire semester. I just don't see an end to this.

wmstu01, know that there are resources for you on our campus. Everyone from your RA to Academic Advising to the Counseling Center is here to support you and to assist with this transition. We want you to be successful and to be happy. We admitted you knowing you have the potential to be both. It may just take some time.

We urge you to contact the Dean of Students Office (757-221-2510) immediately. They would gladly meet with you to discuss what’s not going well and how to resolve the situation best so that you can be the successful happy student you wish to be.

Talk to your professors.
Form study groups.
Talk to your RA. Your RA can put you in touch with everyone on campus that can help you.

If you are working hard, your professors will work with you. The professors at W&M are very nice people.

You should definitely follow W&M Admission’s advice and call the dean of students.
You need to talk to people who can help you.

You need to figure out your issues with depression, whether you mean literally depressed, or just bummed out that you haven’t been doing as well as you thought you would. The counseling center is there to help.

Try not to stress about your grades. If you are working hard and talk to the dean of students and your professors, they will work with you to make sure you get on the right track. It’s hard to understand and see the bigger picture about grades sometimes, but they are not what defines you as a person, and not even the most important thing about college.

W&M admitted you because they know you can be successful there. Take advantage of all the services that are offered. Best wishes.
