What does everyone thing about the following:

Taking a low stipend for a school located in a town with a very low cost of living...small supplemental loan or part-time work may be needed

Taking the higher stipend for the school located in a city with a higher cost of living

Would you go for the first one if you liked the school better? Or would you go to the second one to save some money?

go where you like the most. dont worry about money. plus, im sure youll make plenty of money after school to pay off your loans quickly.

as for me, ive only got into ucla's masters program (rejected from 5 phd programs so far). yet, i'm still going there, despite not receiving any funding at all... i'll just pay as much up front as i can and take out the rest in loans. :-/

If you have the choice, then there's only very rare cases where a slight gain in prestige is worth the tradeoff for no funding. But don't just ignore the funding issue altogether. If all you need for the first school is a small loan and you like it much better than the other, then it may be worth it, but otherwise I think not.

hey guys, I was hoping to get some input on your views on UCLA vs. Columbia for an MS in EE. I headed over to LA a couple weeks ago for the grad weekend, will be heading to Columbia in a couple of weeks to check it out. What are your opinions on both schools?

Do you have any ideas about what to do if you decide to go for a PhD w/no funding offered initially? I am in the same boat for biomed eng...
Also congrats, you got into some boss schools!

Thanks!
I talked with one senior who is studying at Stanford EE. I was told that 1/3 PHD get fellowship awarded and 1/3 get TA and RA. The following 1/3 have to self-support their study. Some transfer to Msc because of no funding. Even those get fellowship awarded for the first year will have problem to get TA or RA from the second year, the competition is really tough. If there is no funding provided from Stanford, I have to give up and wait for Duke and Upenn's response. Actually I like Duke very much, if awarded fellowship from Duke, I will accept and go to Duke.

For those of you waiting for Stanford EE's funding decisions, I think they are in the process of notifying people. I received an email today and they have offered me fellowship support for the 2007-2008 year. I am not sure what happens in the second year as I have to complete the MS program first.

Gsme, can I ask when did u get ur Admission email? March 2nd???
I received the email on March 5th and another friend received on March 2nd got fellowship offered on March 10th...I have no email notifying me funding issues until now!
